I’m KTC. I’ve just joined. I’ve been knitting and crocheting for a few years from 2006 and 2009 respectively. As I recall, I actually learned to knit from the KnittingHelp website back in 2006.
This looks like a very nice place. I think I’ll enjoy it here.
Hey fellow knitters! My name is Madi Burnham. I’m from the great state of Utah in the United States! And I love to knit! I admit, I only know a handful of stitches, but I want to get better and learn more about knitting! Do you guys know some easy first projects or previous discussion pages on this web page that might be helpful for me? Do you only meet online or do you have offline interactions as well? Thanks in advance! Excited to get to know all of you!
Welcome from the other side of the country! Would be lovely for all of us to get together but mostly we meet here.
What kind of things are you interested in knitting? Ravelry is an incomparable source for patterns. You can do advanced searches and look for good first projects.
Hey Mag! Oh my goodness, this site really is a life saver, I’m new to knitting too and I love it. You know those knitting problems that you are quite sure defy logic and will become riddles for the ages? Most of them are solved in a few minutes on here it’s just amazing how much these guys know.
Good luck with your sweater - I definitely wouldn’t have the patience for that! I’m knitting a blanket in squares, but I get breaks to do over projects too, else I think I would go insane!
Hey Frances!! It feels nice to be in a community with other beginner and all these amazing geniuses! I know exactly what you mean! I used to think I´d never be able to get anything done with knitting because I couldn’t understand it… and when I landed here I couldn’t believe my luck! This is the place to be!!
Thanks for wishing me luck with the sweater - I had to stop working on it lately because I suddenly wanted to try making mittens (second go), this time with a nice pattern that someone here suggested… and I made half a mitten on a Saturday morning, and then went to a birthday party, and my big mouth opened to offer the not-yet-finished mitten and its pair of course so… here I am trying to make them perfect in reasonable time! I am stupid for doing that, note to self… well at least I did not promise to also make a cowl and a hat in matching colors!!
Good luck with your blanket! I think big projects need to be put aside for a wee bit every once in a while, so that we can fulfill our novelty-seeker nature by switching to other projects
I feel like a knitting newbie since it’s been years since I’ve knit and no idea why I waited so long. Now I’ve forgotten so much and am so happy I found this site too. It’s coming back slowly but I have hopes. Right now, I’m searching for a yarn for a little dressier fingerless gloves that’s somewhat shimmery. My daughter loved a pair she saw on a free pattern, knit flat (luckily since I knit Continental method). I haven’t found any with good reviews and she doesn’t want what she calls “fuzzy” yarn. I forget how to get into the topics area but luckily found these. Thanks for all the help found here!

Knitting in the round has nothing to do with continental or english method knitting. I knit both ways and knit in the round for everything that can be done that way.
Thanks I thought with circular knitting, from what I’ve read so far, that it’s different doing garter and purl stitch on circular than flat. One of the videos I saw said to do stockinette you need to just keep knitting around and it looks like stockinette on the RS, and for garter you have to do a round of knitting and the next a round of purl. Is there a way to do this differently so I can knit it like I do on flat. Knit a row, purl a row for stockinette. Knit every row for garter. I’d love to be able to knit patterns calling for circular needles like the fingerless gloves I made.I found a couple of patterns luckily done with single pointed needles. the straight needles. thanks for help and I’m looking forward to finding hopefully with help, a shimmery or metallic looking yarn that has good reviews
You can knit flat or in the round with circular needles. I don’t even own straight needles myself.
For stockinette in the round you just knit every row. No need to purl because you aren’t working on the back. For garter stitch in the round you knit a row, then purl a row, knit a row, purl a row.
For stockinette flat you knit a row, purl a row, knit a row, purl a row because you are knitting on the back. For garter knit flat you just knit every row on both sides.
Why would you want to do it like you do flat? Part of the beauty of knitting in the round is no seams and fewer purl rows. You can use circular needles to knit flat OR in the round. For most in the round things I use magic loop which is a method of using circular needles with a long cable. There are videos at the the top of the page. I can provide others if you wish.
ETA…weird formatting on this post…
Thanks a lot I think I’ve been intimidated by it knowing only that much but then I’m not sure about how doing different pattern stitches would work because of the differences then in how you’d do something where you do for example a pattern *K1, P2, K2tog, P2, YO" etc. Not knowing if I then do All knits on that pattern since purl stitches make a garter stitch? That’s where I get nervous. I’ve seen videos that show the difference with garter and stockinette but not videos that show instruction wise how to do things like that. Too bad I just bought a bunch of bamboo straight needles since they were on sale 1/2 price! Guess I could just alternate! Oh, one last, what is easier about the magic loop vs. circular needles?
Usually you’ll be doing patterns that are written for in the round knitting so patterns with decreases and yarn overs or lacy patterns aren’t a problem. Often for patterns written for straight needles, the lace pattern stitches are on knit rows anyway with the alternate rows in purl. They can be converted to in the round by simply knitting across the alternate rows instead of purling.
I think giving knitting in the round a try will answer many of your questions. You can try different sts or stitch patterns and see how it goes.
That was great. I didn’t even think of that, that a pattern for making something in the round (like the gloves I’d love to make) would be written exactly like I’d need to do the stitches. Even if the following row is another pattern of stitches for lacy like some I’ve done recently it would be written for exactly what stitches to do. I guess because I’ve never read one for circular, or just popped synapses! Do you ever use magic loop like jan_in_CA many others do? I’d like to make it as easy on myself starting out as possible. I’ve seen using 2 circular needles for a pattern as another alternative. Love all the help. Thanks
I don’t use magic loop so much but I have done it from time to time. It was a lifesaver for a child’s sweater that I recently knit in the round
Two circulars work well too but I think I prefer magic loop over two circs.
If your fingerless glove pattern is listed on Ravelry you can look up the yarns others have used by clicking the tab towards the top of the page for project yarns. Maybe there’ll be some sparkly ones listed.
You can also check out yarns that you’ve already found and see the knitters’ ratings for those yarns.
Thanks. I think the pair for my daughter is a Lion Brand free one - Sparkling Knit Wristers. The yarn used there was discontinued so I checked that yarn’s yardage to have an idea how much I’d need of another yarn. I’ve been looking at yarns and am so glad they have reviews because ones that look perfect turned out to have awful reviews. I’ll keep plugging away…at least I’m persistent. I really appreciate your help,
