Um, yeah. Disappointing. I think the baby halter is cute, but not terribly practical. The tea-cosy is pretty, but not something I’d ever make. And, the skirt… oh my! That, to me, seems like something that might be flattering on a little girl, but not so much on a grown woman. JMHO.
that really bothers me as well. as do tube tops on anyone who isnt sexually mature.
i am not by any means a prude person, but children wearing suggestive or provocative clothing bothers me. i don;t know if its because i was molested that my alarm bells ring harder than others, but i think putting clothing on children that is meant to trigger sexual thought creeps me out. just my perspective.[/quote]
I have to agree. Little girls should dress as little girls.
In Britain a few years ago the “big thing” was wearing clothing from the “Porn Star” clothing line. Most of the time you’d see young women walking around with a t-shirt that looked like someone had dipped their hands in paint and squeezed their breasts. In the middle it had the words “Porn Star” emblazoned in metallic lettering. To me, that just asks for objectification. However, the wost thing was when i saw what must have been a 10-11 year old girl wearing such a shirt while shopping in town. Simply, simply awful.
Right… digression over…
The baby halter walks a fine line - i can see the hippy aspect but also the adult aspect of it.
The skirt is absolutely hideous. Who wants to spend that much time knitting a skirt that looks that bad and needs to be worn over leggings?? Me thinky no.
And the tea cozy? Well, i can certainly see the functional aspect of it (being a consumate tea-drinker) but THAT particular cozy looks like a giant alien breast, complete with nippleage. Again, no.
-hh
This skirt is AWFUL! So awful I actually think it’s hilarious! :rofling:
As for the baby halter, I think it’s adorable. But I guess it’s a matter of wearing the right thing at the right place and at the right age. For a baby that young, I think it’s fine.
However it is scary to see clothes they sell to little girls nowadays. Some stores sell leopard thongs for 7 year old girls, for crying out loud!!!
One of my girlfriends has a three year old, and she said she liked it, and didn’t feel that it was distasteful.
How come I still can’t see it?! Argh! I’m still getting the “This site is temporarily unavailable” message.
Strange…
You are invited over ANY time, Femmy, but if I knit that it would more likely be keeping my soda cold… Do I SEEM like a tea-maker-cozy-user?? :rofling:
And, re: the baby halter, I think its the neckline… the sunsuit that Jan linked to doesnt give me the same feeling that the halter does. Yeah. If the halter didnt have a V neckline, I would think it was cute and much more appropriate.
Wow. The skirt. I’m sure if I was in a foreign country where I did not speak the language I may have too much time on my hands and make such things. Its interesting, but I would never knit it.
The halter is a bit much. I dont mind the exposed shoulers on a baby, but the neckline is too much. I think a much higher neckline would be appropriate and still make it hip. Ten years ago I would have flipped at the sight of this, but if youve tried to buy age appropriate clothing for children in the last five years you know how hard it is. Push up bras for “training bras”, slutty shoes for todlers, and nightgown that look like lingerie. I’ve had to buy my girls shorts and bluejeans in the boys sections so thier hips arent exposed. Keeping girls fashionable while keeping the modest is hard work these days.
No one would dare dress a boy in any equivalent (and what equivalent would that be?) But its ok to dress girls in a sexually provactive way?
Its a personal choice. I also worry that if my girls get used to dressing that way when they are young they will expect me to let them when they are older. Ok, end rant.
Finally I got to see them!! All this excitement and splat. I can see where the alien boob comment came from for the tea cozy, but it is kind of cute in a felted tea cozy sort of way…and along with everyone else, that skirt…yikes. :??
For the baby halter…I am rather modest, but I also feel like babies need their skin covered up to avoid too much sun exposure…not something I would ever put on my (non-existent) child.
Holy cow, that…skirt is just…ugh!!
At first I thought the leggings were tight ribbing on the bottom of it. then I saw the photo of it not being worn and all i could think of was a balloon valance or something. I hate the colors, the shape (or lack thereof), everything. It doesn’t really look like it was even knit well, going by the look of the stitches on the back of it in that weird slanty picture.
I’m pretty surprised Knitty published that. Definitely one for You Knit What!
OK …Ultra Conservative Mom checking in here re: the baby halter top.
I have to be honest. The first time I saw it, I thought, “Hmmm … interesting.” And I immediately decided it was something I would never knit, nor did I have any desire to knit it. I definitely didn’t go, “Ohhhhhh … that’s SO cute!” But I really didn’t think anything negative of it initially until someone here suggested that it was too suggestive. I guess it just didn’t strike me that way.
So, I just went back and looked @ the baby halter again. First of all, I think the back is too open & leaves too much skin exposed for sun reasons. Secondly, I think the neckline is very modest. Thirdly, I think it would be just as cute – perhaps more cute – if it were not knit w/ that neckline. Personally, I think a little tank top would be much nicer. In summary, I wouldn’t put this on a child of mine – existent or not – but mainly because I don’t particularly like it – the top that is, not the existentially questionable child … or would that be the questionably existential child?
In addition, I’m sure that there’s someone out there who could find a way that a baby could get in trouble with the ties around said baby’s neck. Perhaps it should come with a few warning labels or something. Wait … the warning labels should be on the skirt.
that really bothers me as well. as do tube tops on anyone who isnt sexually mature.

I went on a camping trip with 7th graders and it amazed me how much time they spent in the morning putting on makeup. Since our school doesn’t allow makeup, I of course didn’t think it should be allowed on a school trip.
I also can’t believe how many of them have shirts or shorts that say “hottie” or “you want me”. Seriously! 13 years old.
And I am definitely not a prude. The oversexualization of children in our society is shocking. And in my environment (the privileged private school) the number of moms who come to our school in inappropriate clothing (how about a workout bra and workout PANTIES) that basically was a bikini. Put a big shirt on over or something!
Good lord… gross.

Yep gotta agree.
I’ve got to 2nd this!! I’ve had a really hard time finding anything for my DD to wear here lately because it all looks like it belongs on a stripper. I don’t get it – nor do I want to!
I am so glad I have a son!
My 9 yr old is at the age that she LOVEs clothes and shopping to the extreme. Unfortunatly she is really into the short skirts, tiny shirts, pants with words on the bum the whole 9. Tim and I do not allow her to wear thoes type of clothes and refuse to purchase them for her. Even more unfortunatly though is that the sperm donor read: the man who plays daddy when he feels like it, Loves to shop and sees no problem with clothes like that on girls. Honestly some of the things that girl comes home with is just upsetting. We also do not allow her to leave the house with make up on. The SD puts make up on her and does her hair, what ever she wants. Really its like he is trying to be her friend instead of her dad. But that is a rant for a whole different time. Honestly the stuff that kids wear now a days is just terrible! I would not have been caught dead in skimpy stuff when I was that age (of course the stirrup pants and ginormous shirts are but coverage wise but not cute lol)
Anyway as I was saying the fact that clothing companies actually make stuff like that for kids to buy is terrible, the fact that some parents let their kids get out of the house with that stuff on is just plain sad really.
My mom had a rule that goes in my house as well: our home is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship, and I am the dictator. Therefore, children have no right to privacy (this changes as the child earns it) and have no personal property. That means that it doesn’t matter if you buy it with your own money, because you don’t really have your own money. Because, after all, it IS a dictatorship, and the dictator reserves the right to confiscate anything and everything that doesn’t meet with approval.
Now for my SON, instead of worrying about skimply clothes we argue about whether certain video games are appropriate. I don’t CARE that 13 is a teenager and should therefore mean that he can play games rated “T” for teen. I decide what he plays, which means, we go into best buy and try them out together. If they are shooting games that have too much blood that you can’t turn off, then NOPE! Also, no gratuitous sex or bad imagery of men or women. Like Grand Theft Auto. Yikes!
i remember when i was a kid i had a t-shirt that was red and had sparkly writing. i LOVED it…i mean seriously…who wouldn’t love a red t-shirt with sparkly writing. I had no idea what it said…couldn’t say what it said and didn’t have any idea what it meant…all i cared about was that it was red and sparkly and mom let me pick it out myself.
how was i to know that my t-shirt that said “Classy Chassis” was suggesting i had a good body. i guess i did for a 10 year old.
Mom just thought it was funny because she knew i had no idea what it meant. if i had been 15 she never would have allowed it!
