Want to knit Charlie Brown zigzag using plain pattern

I want to knit a Charlie Brown sweater for my grandson, size 2 or so. I have sketched the zigzags on graph paper and have a plain pattern, but how do I go from there?
Thx!

How many stitches will you have and how many squares wide are the zigzags you drew out? You might need to work out where to add a line to show you where to start the repeat if your paper has fewer squares than you will have stitches. But, aside from that, I think it will be a case of knitting up to where you want the zigzags to be, and start following the chart (reading chart from top to bottom if you’re making a top down garment, or vice versa). Remembering to also follow the pattern instructions at the same time, unless it’s a long enough plain section!
Make a note of the row you started on if you’re doing the motif on both sides.

If you don’t already have knitting graph paper, I would suggest maybe downloading some and printing it. Regular graph paper won’t have the correct ratios. This is the site where I downloaded mine from. Portrait, landscape, 2:3 ration, 4:5 ratio, letter or A4 sized - all combinations. Y:ou’ll need to scroll down a ways to get to all the links
