Hello everyone! Amy Sundari Finlay here, the creator of KnittingHelp, and the hands/voice/face in KH videos. First, since I don’t post here often, I just want to say “Hi!” and also thank you for your participation in our forum! Especially to our regulars, thank you so much for your long time presence. It wouldn’t be the same here without you!
After 21 years, our site’s videos need some love and updates, and I’m beginning the process of re-shooting many of them! I’d like to know, beyond the obvious technical limitations (no sound in some of the earliest ones, grainy quality in many…) if there is anything you’d recommend I do differently or include. For instance….
Did I get a demonstrate of something wrong in a video?
Did I include erroneous information or suggestions?
Is there a topic that should have a video here? (Please tell me: how essential is it in your knitting, and what do you love about it?)
I have about 200 videos to redo, so I may not get to all the suggestions, but I appreciate any and all input at this point to help me prioritize which to redo and when! I’ve learned a lot in the time since I shot some of these videos, so I have some of my own ideas, but I’d love to hear yours as well!
Hi, Amy! Your videos were so helpful to me when I was learning how to knit. I’ll need to review them to see if I have suggestions. Thanks so much for asking!
ETA I took a quick check and didn’t find a grafting video. It wouldn’t be a remake but a grafting video that does not require those stupid mantras would be amazing. Basically, look at the stitch, decide whether it’s to be a knit or purl according to your pattern, and work the opposite first. That is, if it’s to be a purl the first pass is knitwise and the opposite for a knit. Not what you asked but a truly useful grafting video to enable knitters to graft any pattern without having to run down one specific to the need in hand would be awesome.
PS Is the preview post screen gone? I can’t find it. The last update changed the edit screen. Not complaining!
Hi GrumpyGramma! Thanks so much for all you contribute here, I know you’ve been an active member for many years at this point and are helpful with answering people’s questions and generally participating. Thanks, I appreciate you!
I do have a video on Kitchener stitch in the tips section. I think you must’ve been looking in the bind off section, which is a great suggestion in itself. I should definitely have it in there!
I like your idea for a formulaic approach in concept but am confused by the “opposite” suggestion since with the stockinette stitch facing you one must start with slip one k-wise. Check out my video in the tips section and let me know if you’d still change it. I do use a mantra, and I may have in fact started the trend with that video, as I made it up to help keep track of the steps and honestly still use it today. I like the idea of any simpler concept though so if you’d like to share an example of what you mean I’ll definitely consider it!
It sounds like you and Mary Anne are working out the mystery of the preview button. If not and you want me to put it before Sheldon, let me know.
Thanks, Mary Anne, this is a great one! I actually do have it in the bind off section under knit one pearl one bind off. Perhaps I should give it a second title of sewn bind off!
I haven’t tried it yet, but my friend thinks it’s easier to remember/figure out than the graft formerly known as Kitchener (there’s a movement to remove his name, as he didn’t have anything to do with developing the stitch, and turned out to be a not so nice guy).
I got scolded once for pointing out that Lord Kitchener probably had no idea how to knit. There’s evidence of sock grafting long before he supposedly invented it. My guess is someone’s grandmother did it and showed whoever it was that presented grafted toes to Kitchener. I can’t find the video again but I recall it was in one of the weekly podcast videos Roxanne Richardson does. BTW I just laughed when I got scolded.
ColoCro and Creations, it’s nice to meet you both, and thank you for your contributions as regular members.
ColoCro, the Finchley graft is certainly less to remember! What a graceful take on grafting, thanks for sharing that, complete with the video! I also appreciate the info on Kitchener. I’ll have to look into that!
Hi Amy, I visited forum to find answer and never left, every day something interesting pop up that wide my knowledge of knitting. Charts and visual on videos is for me or anyone who dont know enough English. Thank you for doing videos and this one I found very helpful, did that mistake many times myself.
I might not reply a lot on topics because not sure how to explain in English but enjoy reading it. My passion is crochet with thread not yarn. Doilies and tablecloths from charts not written pattern.
Thank you again for this forum
I’m glad you’re here, ZKOhio! Crochet was my first yarn craft love, and I still enjoy it, including working with finer cotton occasionally. It sounds like what you are doing is very fine and challenging work! You’re welcome to share your crochet things here as well, there’s a lot of knitters who crochet too.
I finally found the grafting video! It’s well hidden. lol I think I’ll just continue to do my own thing when I graft. I’m unable to explain it so it makes sense. I will say that I count, not a mantra for a specific pattern, so I know where I am in the 4 step series and it makes no difference if 1, 2, 3, or 4 is a knit or a purl - I just look at the stitch and put the yarn needle into it as appropriate. I’ve seen something similar in other videos and if I come across it again I’ll share a link if you’d like.
I don’t have preview available. The attachment to salmonmac’s post includes the bottom of the reply box then and it’s the same now. I would like to have preview so if Sheldon has the time to look at it that would be nice. I might try a different browser tomorrow. For now I’ve cleared cache, closed and restarted Firefox, and now I’ve restarted the computer. I think I’ll go to bed now. lol
