I need help with wrap and turn in this pattern . I’m getting wholes I’m the knitting at the wrap and turn spot .
Are short rows new for you? They can be tricky. There may be some small holes but usually in garter stitch they just disappear into the fabric. I prefer the way this video shows. It’s faster, easier, and it works.
Thank you so much I’ve done this hat before with help from this site , but can’t remember what I did . I might be back
So, it looks like she doesn’t wrap the stitch , she just slips the stitch and turns the work ?
GG’s video is a good one and a method for short rows in garter that makes good sense.
Here’s a link to the last time you posted about this hat:

And also a quote from the pattern re short rows:
“NOTE: For our complete Short Rows tutorial, please click here . Because this pattern is in garter stitch, you’ll only follow the “Wrap And Turn On The Knit Side” section of the tutorial. For the same reason, you won’t need to later pick up the wraps. Simply ignore them when you come to them and work the wrapped stitch normally.”
I’m trying these short rows again on this hat . Why am I getting big holes at the beginning and end of these short rows ? I’ve done this hat before , with your help , and now , I can’t remember what I did .Can anyone try to help me again? So sorry to bother you with this same problem.
It may help if you can post a photo of the ends of the short rows. Use the landscape icon in the middle of the top banner of the Reply box then follow the directions to upload a photo.
Thank you so much . I need to start over again, since I ripped it out. As soon as I get to where I’m having a problem, I will take a picture for you so you can see where I’m going wrong . Thank you , again
Here is my problem with these short rows . I’m getting huge gaps at the beginning and end of the row. I’m slipping the first st so I can knit again? I don’t know what to do when I reach the end of the row .
After 2 set up rows (rows 1&2) you repeat row 3 the given number of times. Each time you are working one stitch past the previous w&t.
Short Row 3: Knit to wrapped stitch,
knit wrapped stitch,
wrp-t the next stitch.
You can mark the wrapped stitch and also look for the small gap immediately to the left of the wrapped stitch. You’ll bridge that gap by working a w&t on the next stitch.
It looks like you may be turning at the same point each time so that you never extend the center sts by adding in the sts on either side of the center. Each short row will end with a previously wrapped stitch (red marker), a gap (blue dot) and then the next stitch to be wrapped (orange dot) on the current row.
Ok. I’m starting all over again. I’m going to try removable stitch markers this time. I just completed the first 2 rows of knitting, and am switching to the smaller needles, setting up the round. I’m doing the toddler size. Can you guide me after I set up this round?
Sure, be happy to. I’ve had this cute hat on a to-do list for far too long.
Thank you so much! I made this a yr ago with your help, but forgot what I did .
Ok I’m back! I under the wrap and turns now, I was turning at the same spot . But, do I continue to knit the entire round after I do the wrap and turns within the 18 stitches (toddler size)? I’m still getting huge gap at the beginning of the round. I think I’m supposed to continue the entire round each time I do a wrap and turn .
The yellow marker is the beginning of the entire round .
Don’t knit the rest of the round. The point of the short row is to have extra rows only in the area of the earflap. Once the short rows are complete you’ll knit the entire round and continue to do so. It looks like you’re doing it correctly on the left (near the red marker) in the photo but somehow turning at the same place on the right (by the yellow marker).
Each row ends with a wrap and turn. The next row also ends with a wrap and turn. Think of these as occurring in pairs. You’re doing it correctly on the left but somehow not extending the row on the right and instead turning at the same stitch. Try marking the wrapped stitch each time so that you knit one stitch past that previously wrapped stitch. Looking for the small gap after the wrap stitch from the previous row may help.
You’re almost there. Clearly looks lovely on the left side near the red marker. You just need to do the same on the right side near the yellow marker.
The short rows will extend on each row somewhat like this:
Thanks for helping me, again . So, the yellow marker is where the beginning of the whole round starts . Am I continuing too far on the right side ? I’m not sure where I stop , once I Purl back . The 18 sts are between the two red markers . I think I’m continuing too far ? Do I just stay within the two red markers ?
I see that I’m not adding the stitches on the right side , from looking at my work . I have to start over again. I’m missing something that should be simple . I wish you were here with me!
The red markers look about right.
Here’s what I did for the left ear flap:
“Repeat Short Row 3 13 more times, until you have wrapped the stitch next to the Left Ear Flap marker, ending with a wrong-side row.”
I kept count of the number of times I’d worked Row 3 but the Right Ear Flap marker is also a good indicator. Should be 8 garter ridges.
You decided to make this hat in stockinette (alternating knit and purl rows on the short rows) instead of garter? The wraps will show more in that case.
