It is wonderful to hear that he is doing so well. I hope he gets lots of cards for his birthday. Great to hear that a party is being arranged for him.
Thanks, but it’s hardly anything compared to what Austin is going through.
I’m glad things are progressing for him. I went through some burn treatment myself back in the 60s so I know it’s no fun.
Hang in there Austin, it does get better.
Great to hear Austin is progressing well. We’re thinking of you.
For those of you who don’t venture into the charity knitting section, several wonderful knitters and crocheter made 8 inch squares and sent them to me to make a blanket for Austin.
We ended up with 30 squares, 2 of those I made and all the rest came from everyone else. Once Austin gets his blanket I will post a picture.
Also I have sent Austin BIG map so he can mark all of the wonderful places his post cards have come from. I even had it gift wrapped for his birthday next week.

Austin came through surgery fine today. The Dr. said he got the back of both legs done without using all of the cultured skin that was ready this week. :happydance: They usually have 800cm each week to work with - he sent 100cm back up to the lab to save for next week. So they will have 900cm of cultured skin plus all of his scalp & most of his lower legs to use for donor sites next week. Dr. thinks it just might be enough to do his entire chest/abdomen. If that happens then all that will be left to graft would be the front of both legs. I still haven’t been given a time frame for when we might be able to go home but I’m thinking another month maybe a little more.
Thanks for the update! So happy Austin is doing well. Will continue to keep him & your family in my prayers.
That is such great good news to hear. Austin is a strong young man. I hope he gets to go home soon.
Home will be wonderful for all of you. I hope it happens very soon!
Austin will have both packages by his birthday ![]()
Rabbit,
I have to say, I am very impressed with Austin. He is handling this terrible trauma with a strength and maturity that very few adults would show, let alone a 10-year-old.
Kudos to you, of course. But Austin is a very inspirational young man. I wish with all my heart I could know him personally - he most certainly could teach me a few lessons on pain management and courage! And I’ve battled it for over 40 years.
Be very proud of your boy. He will grow into a wonderfully wise and compassionate man… in fact, I think he is well on his way there.
Please tell Austin what I’ve said. He needs to realize how very gifted he is. God has given him strength and wisdom beyond his years. I pray for Austin every day, like most everyone else on this thread.
Be proud, Austin. Be strong. Be kind. And know you are loved beyond all knowledge.
You are a very, very special and gifted young man.
Sincerely,
Dot
Hi Rabbit,
Been really busy with work and all…I know Austin birthday is this week and I just wanted to take a few minutes now to wish him the best for his birthday…I know it a few days early…You know I think of your family often and you are always in my thoughts. Love, Grandma:hug:
:cheering:
I give you Austin’s Blanket.
Austin’s 2 day post op bandage change was today. Dr. said everything looks great! I can’t wait to see if they get his whole chest/ abdomen done this week! I am so homesick at this point I even miss the housework - I never thought I’d ever say such a thing. He finally ate something yesterday!:happydance: I read the entire menu to him & the only thing he was interested in was poptarts & did they have blueberry ones. He only ate a few bites but it’s a start. Maybe the chocolate cake I got him for his birthday will entice him.
The blanket looks great, nice bright colours.
I hope he can eat and enjoy some chocolate cake.
The blanket looks fantastic. I hope he enjoys it! I also hope he has a good birthday and has some of his cake. Did he get my card yet? I hope so!
i will keep her and her family in my prayers. One of my sons was in the burn unit in saint barnabis in nj. so i know what a rough time she and her loves ones are going though.
I give you Austin’s Blanket.
Christine, that turned out beautifully. So much diversity of color, style and just everything. The big “A” is a great addition, and there is quite a bit of green, which I understand is a favorite.
