My hair + standard knitted hat = mushroom cloud

These pictures are precisely the reason why I make my own knit and crochet patterns for hats. This is exactly why the mainstream knitted hat is not meant for people with hair like mine. It looks like a nuclear weapon was set off under the hat and this is the resulting mushroom cloud. And I made it an inch longer than the pattern called for!

Today’s laugh is on me, no charge!

Try a wide headband like Calorimetry or Panta. That way your ears get covered and your head will stay warm without trying to fit over your hair.

Jiffy Pop comes to mind! :teehee:

Very pretty, though.

Except that the primary reason I really wear hats is to cover my hair. I’ll just have to continue to design my own. Though I did get a book Get Your Crochet On: Hip Hats and Cool Caps. They are made for folk with hair like mine. http://www.getyourcrocheton.com

:teehee: Well, maybe I’ll keep it for when I twist my hair. When I’m wearing it like it’s relatively flat. I would donate it, but to who? It’s wool and not superwash (it’s Mountain Colors) and most charity places want only acrylic.

I meant to say that too; like the colors.

The hat is gorgeous anyway and you did a spectacular job. :muah:

I have big hair, too. In fact, I was Peg Bundy for Hallowe’en once. For the past couple of years, I’ve been having it chemically straightened, which means I can no longer be blonde or even light red. Keeping my gray roots brunette is nearly impossible with straight hair. So… some days I ask why bother?

Anyway, one, two, three knit patterns for big hair. Surely, there are a few hundred more. Maybe I’ll let my treatments grow out and wear them, too.

Ooo I really like the color of that yarn!

I have to agree with you. I like to design my own hats. That way I know it fits ME.

Though I really do like the hat.

I love the colour of your hat!
And I understand your problem, I have had some months without hair, and that does not makes it easier to find a hat-pattern that fits.

It’s a beautiful hat! I have such fine, straight hair I look bald with a hat.

Wow. So rarely do you see people of color making knitting books for people of color. Imma have to go to the library and see if they got it!!!

Even if it doesn’t fit perfectly it looks wonderful and those colors are so fabulous!

That’s a pretty hat Mwedzi! I just finished a BIG newsboy cap, the first hat that actually looks pretty good on me. But it’s a little too big… I’ll post a picture after I get my camera charged.
Sometimes when my hats are a little too small, I add on the bottom, either fold it up or make a floppy thingy like a brim.
Going to try that with a hat I made that looks like a little bucket.

Feminist Mama, I had the same reaction. I was buying this book in my LYS and had to exclaim, “this book is full of black people!” Of course other people were in it, too, but still. It was pretty shocking.

Thanks for the link, Bastelmutti. I didn’t know about that online knitting/crochet magazine. Why is it that I didn’t know about that? It’s great.

I ran into the same problem when I made my son (naturally curly hair) the same hat. I frogged the hat and re-did, an inch longer, and it still had the same mushroom affect. :pout: He did not seem to mind but I will check out the other patterns you reference.

That’s a great hat! Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it could be. Not only do I have large hair, especially in this central TX humidity, but I have an insanely large head to go with it. My whole family is known as the “Big-head Duvals” My dad had to have his racing helmet custom made. And I can’t even wear most men’s hats, let alone the cute women’s hats. Guests typically spend a solid ten minutes at the hat rack exclaiming over the giant sized hats. So count your blessings that it’s just large hair, instead of both.

mwedzi, your hat is BEAUTIFUL!!! :inlove: I have “big hair” (thick and curly) as well as an “abnormally” large head, so I have a hard time finding hats that fit my hair and my head. The SnB “Newsboy Cap” is GREAT for big, full hair, and accomodated even my big head! :teehee:  It’s really comfy, too (I used Paton’s Classic Merino wool yarn; used one skein per hat) You can tailor it to make it accomodate full/longer hair or not, which is nice. Here’s a pic of it. It’s more like a rasta hat than a newsboy cap.

I’m sorry you’re having trouble with finding hats that fit the way you’d like.

Looks great to me.
