Joel-n-Liliyarn Show: Awesome visitors & Ravelry!

Hello everyone,

Well as you can tell by my lack of presence, life is still pretty insane. July 4th was quiet for us. We didnt go anywhere, which was ok because it rained pretty solidly and we would have been soaked if we had. We stayed home and watched the Wash DC and Boston shows.

My wife finished her last class for her degree, the only thing she now has left before graduation is her clinicals, which we expect will start near the end of July, maybe beginning of August. She actually flew out today to California to my in-laws to go see our kids and fly back with them. That whole situation has been nuts as is and I won’t go into it right now but let’s just say I’ll get to see my 8 yr old daughter for a whopping 2-3 days before she is gone to Michigan to go see my parents. I will get to see my 5 year old a little bit more but that’s because she isnt going to Girl Scout Camp, so that’s cool.

In the meantime, I get to do a bunch of housework. lol

We’ve really been working on trying to get the house in order, both inside and out. Still lots more to go though and I only have 4 evenings to complete it.

My wife gave me a straight Knifty Knitter than I’m kind of excited to try out. I’m curious to see how it works. I’ve been talking with her about yarn organization. The yarn has completely taken over the house. It’s in the storage closet in our room. It’s in the living room, the bathroom, and under the bed. LOL It’s like living with “The Blob” only the yarn isnt trying to kill me. I have an idea that should really help but we need to buy some storage containers… so waiting for payday, I suspect.

Other news for the geeks and techies on here. I installed Xandros 3 (Linux) on my computer’s primary slave drive so I now have a dual boot with XP Pro and Xandros 3. That’s kind of neat. I’ve been working alot on prepping more stuff for my business. I need to get some web pricing now and figure out costs, taxes, etc, for the online portion of the biz, not to mention if there is enough of a market for what I’m putting together. (I suspect there is, but need the numbers to back it up.)

Not much else new… I’m trying to get my boss to deal with paperwork to get me a laptop and a VPN connection so that I can work from home 3 or more days a week. If I only work from home 3 days a week that would still save me 300 miles and between 9-12 hours of commute time every week, so yeah, I’m pushing for it.

Well… that’s news for now… talk to you soon… i hope.

Glad you could stop in! That would be so wonderful if you could work from home! Tell him you’re willing to do it for the environment.

There must have been something wrong with your connection here, though. I got to the paragraph that started, "Other news for the geeks. . . " and it got all blurry. Or maybe that was my attention span.

Hey Joel!! I hope you do manage to work from home, though you’ll have to get the yarn under control…it’s like kudzu at your house! Say, do you have a secret for growing yarn? Is that what’s happening? Have you gone all mad scientist on us?!

My eyes did this, Ingy:

 sending “work at home vibes” your way

:cheering: :cheering: :cheering: Dual bootiness!

Dual bootiness?! :roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

JOEL!!! It is always great to see you!!! Good Work Vibes coming your way!!!

Joel – I’m a little late to the well-wishing party (as usual), but I hope you get to work from home, too. Not only would it save you time, but with gas prices, it would save you a TON of $$$ !!! Oh yeah, and like Ingrid said, it would be good for the environment, too!!! I would definitely push that point along w/ the time savings w/ your boss.

Good luck & I hope you get to pop back in and update us sometime soon!

Hiya!

Quick update. I talked with my new boss about the working from home thing, he talked with his boss. So… basically, I have paperwork I am filling out to start the process to become a telecommuter. It would still have to be approved by the bigger fish in the pond (Sr. Mgmt) but at this time, I (and they) see no reason why I won’t be able to become a telecommuter… it will take the paperwork/approval process some time and then time to set up the hardware, etc at my house but I’m guessing there is a good chance I could be telecommuting full time or near full time by the end of the year.

YEA!!! Here’s hoping…

Thanks for the support everyone and good vibes.

"Good… good… good… good vibrations… "

Now who’s gonna be the first one to complain about a BB earworm? :roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

BTW: congrats on the possibles, and I’ll keep my dpns crossed for ya!

:cheering: :cheering: :cheering: I hope it happens!

Good evening and welcome to Knit-ley News… I’m Joely Schmoley… We begin our newscast with these ongoing stories.

Estes Park is out. The hospital there has decided to not accept any new students at the moment. Clinicals for DW however to begin on the 24th at one of two destinations but as of yet, the powers that be havent stated which. The plan is the first four weeks will be completed at one of these yet unknown locations and then the remaining 8 weeks will be held at another unknown location. When asked, the program director stated she was unable to clarify any details at this time.

Request paperwork for telecommuting is being completed. Recent activity suggest the paperwork could be submitted to authorities as early as Monday, July 17. Preliminary reports have shown favorable conditions for acceptance but finals results wont be available for quite some time.

LOL

:roflhard: :roflhard: :cheering: :cheering:

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

 Joel!!!

Whew… ok, I think I got my paperwork done to submit to my boss. I gotta sign it and I’m going to have my DW look it over before I send it. But assuming it’s ready to go, he should get it first thing Monday morning.
:cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

Dang!!! I took a minute just to do a couple quick calculations.

Ok… Keep in mind, I haven’t been under $40 a week for gas in a long time, and the weeks when I only spend $40, I either dont fill up at the pump or I have days off. Assuming I base my telecommuting $avings on my 5 day commute and CURRENT gas prices (I paid $2.81/gal this morning.) And with the recent oil price jumps I expect gas above $3/gal within a week…

$40 Gas/Week for 1 year = $2,080 savings
$50 Gas/Week for 1 year = $2,600 savings
$60 Gas/Week for 1 year = $3,120 savings

That’s alot of yarn.

Wow, that IS a lot of yarn!!! :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

Holy beans, Joel, you could make yourself a cable knit Qiviut sweater at those prices!

Congrats on being one step closer to being a FT telecommuter.

<Cartman voice:> HOLY CRAP!!! That’s a lotta stash money there… plus extras like Options needles and such!

$2.81 for gas…I wish I could pay that- right now, we are at about $3.15 around here!!! It cost me over $50 to fill the minivan last week.

That is great news, Joel- I hope that all goes well, and that you will be telecommuting ASAP!!! :cheering:

Fantastic news, Joel!!! I hope your request goes through w/ flying colors. What a monumental savings for you!

Ok…

I got some good news! (No… I didnt finish an afghan the size of Rhode Island.) No, I havent gone completely mad scientist on ya all either… although I gotta wonder what that yarn is really doing under the bed when we’re not there. (Maybe it’s playing Twister…)

  1. My telecommuting request GOT APPROVED! :cheering: I’ve begun the semi-messy logistical process of getting it set up. This is a first for my boss, so both of us are going through a learning curve getting me set up. Today, I’ve just sent in paperwork for them to install a biz phone line in the house. In the meantime, I’ve recently begun carpooling with my neighbor who works less than 1/2 mile from me so that’s helping too.

  2. My wife begins her first four weeks of Clinicals on Monday. She got the shift she wants and the hospital where she will be located is only about 30 minutes away, its an easy drive from our house. (I used to take that route on my way to work a year or two ago.) So all in all, she’s VERY happy with how that situation is working out.
