Help with a pattern

Heah everyone,
I need a little help with this pattern I’m trying to follow… I’ve never really done gloves or anything like socks, so I need just a bit of help figuring this one out… I still have a bit to go to before I get to to this actual spot, but figuring it out before I get to it would be grande…

Here’s the pattern text:

Make thumb hole (left glove):
Work 20 stitches in A, work 6 stitches with cotton waste yarn, slip 6 cotton stitches back to left needle and work them again in A, work remaining twelve stitches.

The problem I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around is the “work 6 stitches” part.:hmm:

You’re going to use the scrap yarn as both a stitch holder and provisional cast on to hold those 6 sts until later. So knit them with the scrap yarn, put those stitches back on the left needle and knit them again with the regular yarn. Then keep going with your mitt/gloves. When you’re done, you’ll come back to the sts, take out the scrap yarn and you’ll actually have 12 sts, 6 for the lower edge of the thumb hole and 6 for the upper edge of it.

Clear as mud…
Mostly just because I haven’t done it yet… We’ll see how I do when I get there… I may be back

Ohhh quick question… how do you “Work the 6 stitches” … do you tie it on as with a color change… or just start knitting with it…

I’ve done this before and it’s easy.

When you get done with the 20 stitches drop the main color and take a piece of scrap yarn and knit across 6 stitches with it. It’ll be like you’re changing colors and you don’t need to tie it on. Now take those 6 stitches and slip them back to the left needle and knit across them AGAIN using the main color. It leaves a little strip of a different color yarn which is where the thumb will go. I suggest using a smooth yarn to make it easier to remove later.

Alrighty… thanks to both of ya guys… I think I got it down… Both of you guys are awesome…

You’re welcome. It’ll make more sense when you do it.

To ‘work’ x stitches, you just knit them in pattern. You don’t have to tie on the scrap yarn, just leave a tail and start in.

One more quick question regarding this patternn…

Carry the color you aren’t working with up the right hand side of the work.

Now the way I was going to do this is, to do the 4 rows and then carry it up the right side, or should I do this differently… it’s only 4 rows, so I figured that would be okay…

I also figured out my first 6 rows I did wrong… so I’m more than likely going to start over on this project  Cause I wasn’t paying attention to the pattern… (2x2 rib)

You can carry it up the side. I think if you take the working yarn under the other color it’ll bring it up to where you’ll need it next so you don’t have a loop to catch on someones fingers. I’m not positive how to wrap it so maybe Sue (or someone) can chime in.

BTW… since you are doing ribbing and changing color let me give you a hint… if you knit the whole row on a color change instead of ribbing it’ll hide the purl bump color changes and and you won’t even be able to tell any difference. Just continue ribbing after that row. Here’s some mittens I did recently for charity. You can see that it makes no difference at all to knit the color change.

The color change actually comes after the ribbing… which is nice… the ribbing is in one color and the the patter (St st) is in alternating colors…

Thanks everyone… this is what happens when you get too busy with life and forget patterns

Oh I see…well, now you know though.

Okay everyone… I got my LEFT Side done… now I’m to the BO section… and this is a freaky and custom BO… so I’m going to put the instructions for BO in here and see if ANYONE can help me with this one… I get parts of it… but other parts confuse me… the parts I have in bold, are the ones that give me a headache…

I appeciate all help in advance…

[ol]
[li]Transfer Stitches to be case of to a dpn. While Transferring, rearrange the stitches so that the first stitche is a knit stitch, the seond stitch is a twisted knit stitch (lefthand “leg” is in the front), the third stitch is a purl stitch and the fourth stitch is a twisted purl stitch
[/li]> [li]Using a tapestry needle, sew through the first stitch on the needle from left to right. Sew through the second and first stitches from left to right, Drop th efirst stitch on needle. Turn work
[/li]> [li]Sew through the scond and first stitches on the needle from right to left. Sew through the thir and second stitches on needle from right to left. Drop first two stitches on needle. Turn work
[/li]> [li]Be sure that the yarn is up over the knitting needle and behind the work as you sew. Sew through the second and first stitches on the needle from left to tright. Sew through the third and second stitches on needle from left to right. Drop first two stitches on needle. Turn work
[/li]> [li]Repeat 3 & 4 until all stitches have been bound off
[/li]> [/ol]

Here are the question I have… so do I transfer all 38 stitches (that’s the total) to the DPN’s or just 4 at a time.

When it says sew, does that just mean, pulling the yarn through or is there a special stitch or something I need to do there…

Anywho… lots of questions… after I get this done, If i do… I got LOTS of other questions for all my knowlegable friends out there…
 :knitting: :knitting: :woot:

By the way everyone, here is a pic of the left side…

I think it might be a sewn BO, and I’m not familar with it. But you might try looking that up to see if that sounds like what the pattern describes. Or someone else might be able to tell you.

Well according to the pattern, she said she “made this up herself”

if you guys want to see the whole pattern, here is the link to it…
Pattern

The instructions seem to be detailed enough, try it out and see what happens. If you don’t like it, use another BO.

But the whole twisting of the stitches confuses me… I’m not really sure about that, does anyone have a better BO for a 2x2 rib?

I thought that was referring to twisted rib sts that were in the pattern. If not, maybe they just want you to reorient them like you do in ssk.

I just do a regular BO, whether it’s rib or whatever. Keep it loose, but don’t go up in needle sizes for it, that may cause it to flare out.

Okay so we will try a regular… Knit, Knit, PSSO type of BO? I can do that  I guess it’s just an edge… and since I’m still a beginner… it can’t be perfect !!
