I am doing a patter and I am slightly confused about this instruction
Center shaping:
Work Back Center Decreases on next RS row, and following 8th rows 10 (10, 10, 11, 11, 11) more
times.
Does this mean that I have to repeat Back Center Decreases every 8th row or for 8 consecutive rows, and what then mean 10 times more (rather than 8 times one would assume if it is 8 consecutive rows?)
G’morning! You’re going to work decreases on next RS row. Then you’ll work them every 8th row after that for 10 times. When you see something like “10 (10, 10, 11, 11, 11)”, it’s telling you how many times to do something, based on the size you are making. Make sense?
Kind of… since this means that altogether, for this part - Back Center Decreases - I will be knitting 80 rows, which sounds like a lot, given that the last row for the other work (Side shaping which happens simulteniously) is on row 34 and it is only meant to get - all together - to row 47 (starting with the row joining the left and right yoke sections). So row 80 confuses me…
Side shaping:
Work Right Edge Increase and Left Edge Increase on next RS row, and on following 4th rows 4 (3,
2, 5, 4, 5) more times, then on following alt rows 7 (9, 11, 9, 11, 9) times.
Next RS row: CO 4 (6, 7, 9, 11, 15) st at each end.
(= 70 (80, 88, 98, 106, 114) st, including center decreases up to this point, and 45 (47, 49, 51, 55,
rows, starting with the row joining the left and right yoke sections).
It makes sense if the side shaping only goes up to the armhole bind off that it would take fewer rows to complete the side shaping.
The shaping really is lovely and typical of a Heidi Kirrmaier pattern.
hello just one clarification as far as Side shaping:
Work Right Edge Increase and Left Edge Increase on next RS row, and on following 4th rows 4 (3,
2, 5, 4, 5) more times, then on following alt rows 7 (9, 11, 9, 11, 9) times.
Does this means that - as I am doing the first size after the bracket I only need to do the Right Edge Increase and Left Edge Increase 3 times, rather than 4?
Increase on the next row (call it row 1) and on rows 5,9 and 13 then on every other row for 9 times.
So the increase every 4th row is 4 times total for the second size.
Yes, count the initial row. The pattern is very careful to say 3 times more. Not all patterns are so precise.
It’s a good question and one that’s often confusing.
Hello, it’s me again. I have finished the back and starting the Lower left front, Right Edge shaping, Bust Dart shaping and Left Edge Shaping, which are worked AT THE SAME TIME. And I need some advise
Lower left front:
With RS facing, and new yarn and main needles, starting at left underarm, pick up and knit 3 st per 4 rows (=39 st for 52 rows) along left edge of st st part of back piece, plus 1 st in between the first 2 garter ridges. Pm at 8 st from right edge (for Bust Dart).
As I haven’t worked a garter ridge for the moment I wonder what it means here, where shall I pick up this extra st from? Also where shall I place the PM? I need to kit 8 rows and place it? What edge is she referring to ?
Apologies. I think I got confused. I think one works the Lower left front first and then one starts the Right Edge shaping, Bust Dart shaping and Left Edge Shaping, which are worked AT THE SAME TIME. Is that so?
For the moment therefore, I just need to understand how to deal with the Lower left front, which is where my question is.
Sounds like the pick up of sts starts at what will be the armhole edge and proceeds down to the lower edge. Place the marker 8sts from the beginning of the pick up.
I don’t have this pattern but if you quote exactly the instructions here maybe I can help. Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to copyright.
OPS. I made a mistake and didn’t do the the garter edge at the end of the back! I just did 5 more st st. I’ll have to undo and do the garter edge before continuing. Thanks for pointing this out!
See below the pattern for the continuation once one has finished the back.
Lower left front:
With RS facing, and new yarn and main needles, starting at left underarm, pick up and knit 3 st
per 4 rows (=39 st for 52 rows) along left edge of st st part of back piece, plus 1 st in between the
first 2 garter ridges. Pm at 8 st from right edge (for Bust Dart).
I’ll look into the Finishing when I get there…
Left edge, right edge and dart all refer to the lower left front portion of the pattern. It may help to make a table of the row numbers and the shaping that should occur in each of these 3 sections for your size.
