GrumpyGramma's Knitting Room

Pennants? Is Claire about to win something? :teehee:

My latest sox are done except for weaving in the ends. It’s way to warm to wear them now. Either I’m late getting them done…or preparing for next winter.

So now I’m exploring no heel flap, no picking up stitches heels for shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone cuff down socks and it’s looking like I’ll use a gusseted short row heel. Actually I plan to start just above the heel with a provisional cast on, work the foot, then come back and do the top. That way I can still make it as long as possible. I never had what I considered a good reason not to work toe up, now since my grandson outgrows everything faster than I could hope to finish a pair I will not finish the toe (in a different color even to make removal and replacement easier) until just before I give them to him. Such a lot of bother, he must be pretty darned special.

Ok, so you’re doing an afterthought heel, right? What is a gussetted short row heel?? I heard “no stitches to pick up.” I tried the sweet tomato heel a couple days ago. We won’t talk about the results. :frog: I really need to use a lifeline.

Your grandson sounds very l:heart:ved.

No, not a premeditated afterthought heel, Janis. Do you know what a short row heel is? You work to where the heel goes and then use short rows to make it turn. A gusset is an inserted, triangular shaped piece to add fabric. Increasing on either side of the sole of the sock makes a gusset on each side. The added fabric makes more room for the heel so the sock fits better and IME wears better. The heel is turned with short rows and the stitches are decreased back to where you began. Clear as mud? I tried a heel turn with some acrylic worsted weight that I have lying around and think it will work just fine. I hope it will work just fine. I’m having trouble finding directions that I can easily follow. The Strong Heel is a gusseted short row heel. When I actually have needles in my hands and follow it, this pattern may be exactly what I need.

I sort of tried the Sweet Tomato heel but decided to maybe try it again another time. I think it really fits a wide heel better and none of us has wide heels. My main challenge is shifting gears from toe first to cuff first. It’s harder than I anticipated. Here’s where I’m really hung up: The heels I typically have done increase every other row for a more gradual widening then they narrow back down quickly. I’m not seeing how to get the gradual narrowing going down the foot, all the instructions seem to make the foot narrow down more quickly. Yeah, the mud just got clearer, didn’t it.

Someone posted a link in here to different heel styles and I can’t find it. :hair:

@GG - More than likely this is not what you were looking for, but thought it may be of interest:

Heels by the Number

Who knew there were so many types of heels

And another:

Sock Heels.

Had enough yet? :roflhard:

I ran across an article on Knitty :muah:

Hey, Claire, thanks for the links. I got it in my head that half my stitches are on the heel needle when I start increasing and stop 2 sts shy of doubling them. If I ever need any other number for increasing, I’ll be in trouble.

Here’s an interesting sock: Hat-Heel Sock

I just came across this page about Funeral Stockings and that made me think of Necromancer which someone called to my attention earlier.

I have to try the heel hat. It’s just too odd.

I’m tired of reruns, find me something I’ve not seen already. :gah:

:roflhard: Yeah, I really have looked at most of those links. I have to go back and double check one, it might have something new and/or different…but not both.

The heel hat cracks me up  I like that it has advantages of a toe up and top down sock. Pretty nifty.

The pattern is confusing!!! :gah: I am cracked now. Yeah, I already was, now it’s worse. :teehee: The way it’s put together I find hard to follow and I totally skipped a line that applies to my size so I must tink. At least it’s only 24 sts for a couple three rounds. I wrote it out so I can see what I’m supposed to be doing. Once I make them I think I’ll not need the pattern again, they seem fairly straight forward in construction. I’m using Supersocke Walking - Color 1528. It’s brighter than it appears in the photo. Nice yarn. At that price, I think the Easter bunny needs to bring me more.

Although I have not knitted socks…yet…the construction seems pretty simple, they make sense to me.

That yarn is pretty deeply discounted and it’s real purty :aww:

The Easter Bunny should be hopping along, right to your doorstep!

I just saw your thread with Pagona. I think I’ll come steal it when you’re finished. Which is really the dragon, the shawl or the knitter? :teehee:

When you get to socks you’ll have no problems, betcha. That’s with the socks themselves, the fancy patterns you use might give you pause now and then. :knitting:

I ripped the hat heel and put it away for daytime. I’ll start again with Emily Ocker’s (?) cast on.

Ahem, pay attention to the level in the mug folks.

I’ll give you the shawl when you pry it from my cold, dead hands :roflhard: Which IS really the dragon? It’s a mystery.

I’ll have to check out Emily Ocker’s cast on a little later, I’ve got the page up for it. Have you worked on hat heel today?

I know I’m a dragon. You may have custody of Pagona just as you do my cast iron. :roflhard: I know you’ll enjoy both of them.

I wasn’t home to work on hat heel today so it’ll have to wait a while longer. I think I’ll switch yarns and use a different one. This yarn is great but it doesn’t like to be tinked and frogged multiple times. Besides, it’s so nice I want to just sit and knit and enjoy without learning something new. I have some Lana Grossa Mega Boots Stretch that I want to just enjoy too. I don’t know what yarn I’ll end up using, I just know I’m not quite there yet with the work from the center circle. Maybe I’ll practice the circle on worsted weight just to get the hang of it. The pattern calls for lifted (knit the left loop of the stitch below) increases. Do you think another might be OK for those first couple of increase rounds? Maybe a kfb? It’s really hard for me to do those increases on the fingering weight yarn on those first stitches. The cast on is 8 sts, knit a round or two, increase to 16, knit a round, increase to 24, knit a round, increase to 32.

Did you see that pinkpearl finished her first toe up sock? I’m so :woohoo: for her.

What color in the Lana Grossa? I’ll have to check out pinkpearl’s sock. @pinkpearl, :woohoo: from me too.

So it looks like I may have turned in the middle of a row before finishing it. Whoops! As I was tinking back I thought my Addi interchangeables had come unscrewed, no problem, I can tink back and reconnect.

Egad! The cable actually broke! Right at the end of the piece that screws into the needle. I’ll tink to the end of the row and then figure out what’s next.

Silly me, I thought I might actually be able to finish the shawl in time for Easter.

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

Yes indeed! :cheering: pearl’s sock :cheering:

Will nothing propitiate the :frog: god?

I wish I had something new to contribute, but I’ve hit the point of frogging garter stitch over newbie mistakes… hey! Can I contribute my frogging as sacrifice for Claire???

Freudian short rows? Gosh, you are obsessed with them. :teehee: That is so frustrating. We should know better by now, shouldn’t we: :?? Will the cable be covered under warranty? My only personal experience with Addi needles wasn’t good and so I’ve not looked into getting more of them. I do OK with the ones from Knit Picks and WEBS. I did break a cable but considered it my own fault and didn’t ask for a replacement.

I had to frog Lilac the sweater it should have been good for all of you. I think we’re not making our sacrifices in the prescribed manner. If we could only figure out what that might be.

What are you garter stitching?

OMG!!! What happened to Lilac? I’ve tried to keep up by lurking, guess I haven’t done all that good of a job of it. :frowning:

Husbands coworker had a baby boy and I cast on another Baby Surprise Jacket end of March for idiot knitting when I quit smoking, and had to frog the stripes because I carried the working end of the yarn up the wrong side to change colors. DUH! Told you it was a newbie mistake…

DD tells me I have about 5 more weeks of inattentiveness - her word was stupid  - to go before I get some brainpower back. When she quit smoking it took her about 2 months for the fog to clear.
