Well, we recently watched some documentaries on Arctic explorers, and my DD thought that it was really exciting. Personally, I think it’s just plain dangerous. I really hope I can keep my DD off The Pole.
:roflhard: :roflhard:
:roflhard: :roflhard:  you people have issues! :roflhard: :roflhard:
:roflhard: :roflhard:
My stepmom and MIL crochet and I crocheted long before I knitted. I don’t dislike doing it so much as I dislike the end product. I prefer knitting by far. Haven’t tried that crochet cast on though… is that just that other version of provisional co you are talking about?
Yeah, the crochet cast-on is a provisional cast on. It’s easy and it’s fun!
And Ingy!
:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:
I wish I could hook. I found the cutest halter top pattern… It would be good for hooking and for hooking, I suppose.
:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:
I find crochet MUCH easier than knitting, which of course makes knitting more appealing You can crochet, Cate, I’m sure of it!
I just can’t, though! I’ve tried to learn four different times. From books, from video, and from a real live person. It’s funny, because I like the look of knit things much better overall. :roflhard: I think I only still want to learn because now it’s MOCKING me!
I used to be a hooker years ago–actually I was a knitter and a hooker–but always enjoyed knitting more, mainly because I like the finished product better. I will say, though, when my daughter whipped out a pair of slippers in an afternoon, I have to say it has it’s advantages. Just not enough of an advantage for me, though!
It could be that I’m a little old to hook now, though. :rofling:
Old hookers…makes me think of The World According to Garp. My mom was an old hooker, Ingrid. :roflhard:
:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:
:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard: Get the Happy Hooker book, Cate, and we can start hooking together!
I DO have a gift card to Barnes and Noble. And my dad’s new apartment is a mile (at most) from one. It’s pretty much on my way home from work. This is a terrible, TERRIBLE thing! I’m not going to save any money all summer! :roflhard: Before I started knitting, I was addicted to books. I still have stacks of books I just HAD to buy and haven’t yet read.
Oh MAN! I would really like to knit the Einstein coat BUT…I am already working on a big project, a serape (the one from Sally M’s book The Purl Stitch)…and…I’m kinda scared to try those buttonholes. Are they hard? The only things I’ve knitted before starting the serape are a few scarves, a poncho, headbands for my girls, and a dish cloth.
Patty
OK, Angelia, you’ve been found out. I don’t think you really are doing the Einstein, 'cause the crochet cast-on for that pattern is NOT a provisional cast on. Unless, of course, you’re planning on making your a pullover!! :figureditout:
That said, there is a provisional crochet cast-on. You just crochet a chain of slip-stitch a few loops more than what you need to cast on, and then pick up stitches through the loops on the backside. The one w/ Einy, though, is done using a crochet hook, and essentially you end up wrapping the yarn around the knitting needle while you are slip stitching w/ the crochet hook. You end up with a really nice cast-on edge.
Angelia … I hope you don’t mind me giving you a hard time. (hee hee)
Julie, aren’t those essentially doing the same thing though? I would think the crochet cast on would be much easier and faster, like 2 steps in one.
And Scanda, I’ve never done buttonholes, but I think it’s just a yarn over or two…
Ha DM! :roflhard: :roflhard:
They are kinda the same; it’s just that with the provisional you use scrap yarn, and with the real cast on you use the yarn you’ll knit with and don’t cut it once the cast-on is done. The actual crochet method isn’t different. Oddly enough, I was actually thinking about this last night while I was brushing my teeth! I must have sensed your mockery… :rofling:
And please, if I were sensitive when folks give me a hard time, Cate and Andrea would have run me off months ago!! :rofling: :rofling:

Ditto the  !
We only harass you because we WUV YOU!
Hmmm … … me thinks we’re talking about two different kinds of crochet cast-on here. You guys are talking about the one in Sally’s book but using waste yarn instead of a needle; I’m talking about the one where you crochet a chain, and then pick up stitches from the chain. Then you come back later & unravel the chain to get your live stitches.
And, Angelia, since I now know how tough you are, I’ll just use you for my emotional punching bag on those special days when I feel like yelling at someone.
Just kidding of course … {smooch}
