Double Stockinette Border

I’m going to knitting a blanket pattern of my own (eeeek!) in stockinette. To prevent the roll, I stumbled across the Double Stockinette and have decided I adore the look, so I want to use that as the border. My blanket is a cast on of 360. What I’ve read about Double Stockinette it seems I’ll need to cast on more to get the width I want - is this accurate? It took me forever to get this pattern figured out and I’m dreading having to start over to adjust for more cast on. I’m using Big Twist Comfy #5, planning for a 15 row border top/bottom/sides. Any insight will be appreciated - my fingers are tingling wanting to jump into this project

Hi Kathy. You just need to make sure the number of cast on stitches is a multiple of 2. Keep in mind, however, that this stitch will require much more yarn than regular stockinette so make sure you buy enough.

You do need twice the number of sts as well since half the double knit sts will be on the front and half on the back of the border.
This is an interesting pattern although the reverse of your design. See the initial note Preparation row.

Oof. That’s what I was afraid of. So if my original cast on figure was 360, I’ll need to cast on 720. The body is just basic stockinette…so, do I somehow decrease back to 360 for the body, then increase back to 720 for the bottom border?

If you only want the double knitting on the borders, that’s the only area the needs to be doubled. You won’t have to double the entire number of cast on sts.

Oh boy - this is sounding far outside my skill level. I don’t know how I would decrease for the body. I wanted a 15 stitch border on each side too. I should probably just stick with garter or seed border and try this double Stockinette on a pre-patterned project (that Hoover blanket looks like a fun project)

The Hoover blanket was fun to work. In the note I mentioned the pattern has you cast on the given number of sts but when you get to the inner double knit, you increase in every stitch for the length of that inner section, work the blanket by knitting the border, then the double knit then the other edge border. When you finish the inner double knit, you knit 2 together across that section.

It might be fun to try the Hoover blanket just to see how it goes. You could also set up a swatch to make the blanket you’re thinking of but on a much smaller scale. Work out the stitch count that way before going to a larger version. Let us know how it goes!

I will keep you posted. I’m working on a test portion now to see if I’ve sized the pattern in the body big enough. I am doing the double Stockinette Border on the test, but started it before I read about the need for more cast on stitches, so I didn’t add any extra cast on for it. I’ll post a photo when I finish it. Thanks for the help… and the encouragement!

Would I need to change cast on number if I bordered stockinette with double moss stitch since it’s kind of a ‘scrunchie’ stitch?

You could either double the number of border sts at the cast on or, even better cast on the number you want and then knit front and back into each border stitch (see the Hoover blanket). When you have finished the lower border leave the double sts at each side border and k2tog across the middle section.
