Has anyone ever made these? Do they really taste close to what mashed potates taste like or is it completely off?
I’m quite the fussy eater so make sure to tell me the truth!

Makes me gag just thinking of it. I hate cauliflower, brussel sprouts and can barely tolerate broccoli.
Doesn’t taste exactly like mashed potatoes, but it’s not bad.
HMMM - I like raw cauliflower and steamed cauliflower that still retains some crunch. In general not a fan of overcooked/overprocessed veggies that become mushy and slimey.
So the more important question is do you like cauliflower? If yes, then why cook it to death, ruin its nutritional value and mush it up? And if you don’t like cauliflower then I don’t think cooking it to death and mushing it into baby food will make it more palatable.
I vote NO on the cauliflower mashed potatoes.
I like cauliflower (can’t say LOVE it) but the thought of cauliflower mashed potatoes sound like BLECH!!!
I vote no too!!
I had mashed cauliflower (though I don’t think it was with potatoes) once when my sister made them, and they were actually pretty good. They didn’t have an overwhelmingly cauliflower flavor too them - I mostly tasted the things they were mashed with. I think she used a WW recipe - I went looking for one, but only found a thread on the WW boards: http://www.weightwatchers.com/community/mbd/post.aspx?page_size=25&rownum=1&threadpage_no=1&sincedate=2/1/2009&thread_id=129352870&board_id=130&forum_id=1&thread_name=Mashed+cauliflower%3F&mod_no=&daterange=2days&viewchange=OPENDATEDESC
I roast most of my veggies, but mashed cauliflower doesn’t have to lose all it’s vitamins and such. Steam it, put it in a bowl with some warmed 2% milk and butter if you wish, and mash away. It’ll never taste like mashed potatoes to you, but I like it better. Since there isn’t a vegetable grown in the States that I don’t like, I’m pretty good with anything but boiling them. Until last December I didn’t like Brussel Sprouts, but roasted with a bit of olive oil and some garlic, they’re wonderful.
Thanks everyone. When I say cauliflower mashed potatoes I don’t mean cauliflower with mashed potatoes. I mean in place of mashed potatoes. See we’re venturing into a different kind of eating, less carbs. I’ve seen and heard of this type of substitute for mashed potatoes so I was just wondering if anyone here has actually had them. Obviously they would be seasoned and such to make them taste less like cauliflower and more like a potato. I get the fact that they aren’t going to taste exactly like potatoes but was wondering if they came close before I wasted my time and money.
Let me also add that we aren’t cutting out carbs altogether, we’re just going to try it little by little. We aren’t cold-turkey type of people. Everything in moderation.
Get a small head and try it out. You won’t know if you like it that way until you try it. I wouldn’t put gravy on it though…
Not to hijack your thread, but I thought potatoes were one of the “good” carbs. They get a bad rep on the glycemic index, but they are actually good for you and high in vitamins and minerals. There is even part of the potato that acts like fiber in cleaning the colon and helping you feel full. Do you like yams? They are lower on the glycemic index than a white potato and even higher in vitamins etc than white potatoes. I actually try to buy the garnet yams from whole foods (so yummy). I bake them in the oven with the skin on and then cut them open and eat like a baked pot (without the butter, sour cream etc). You can also mash them after baking and stir in a little salt, brown sugar, sauteed onion and apple and they are sooo yummy. I think baking them keeps the flavor stronger than steaming/boiling. Same goes with rice, white rice is high on the glycemic index, but brown and wild rice are a bit lower b/c of the higher fiber content.
Rather than looking for something to be a “mashed potato” what about trying new veggies cooked in new ways to fill the empty spot on your plate and make mashed taters as a treat once a month. I’ve been doing this with the hubby, we’ve had grilled asparagus, glazed carrots, oven roasted veggies, 4 bean salad, squash and onions, green beans and slivered almonds…
I’ve made them before. My aunt calls them “mashed faux-tatoes” :teehee: I steam them a bit longer than normal and them add a tad of smart balance and reduced fat cream cheese. If you don’t tell yourself that it is supposed to taste like mashed potatoes, then they are really good. I’ll have to add cauliflower to my grocery list!
I haven’t tried it but have heard from many who do like it. I read in my new low-carb cookbook a recipe for Mashed Turnip Garlic dish…am trying it this weekend, should work well, since a turnip is a root (I think) just like a potato.
Sweet potatoes are really good with something like apple or pumpkin pie spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc - and some butter. I skip the brown sugar.
Gah!
I love cauliflower if it’s raw or lightly steamed and still crunchy, but that really doesn’t sound appetizing at all to me.
What Sue said–try sweet potatoes or even better, yams. They’re a lot more nutritious than regular potatoes.
I never liked sweet potatoes much until about 15 years ago. My mother would only serve them at Holiday dinners with marshmallow on them, out of a can so I never saw a raw one. Then I started living with a guy whose mother was from Texas and she baked them. I was amazed you could do that to them. I think I didn’t like them because the canned ones weren’t always cooked all the way through and were hard.
While I do appreciate all of your replies I’m only interested in the cauliflower mashed potatoes. I hate yams & sweet potatoes, :ick: remember, I told you in my original post that I am VERY picky. I hate that about myself and I have stepped out of my ‘box’ over the years, but I think it may have something to do with the fact that when I was very young and at my best friends house her mother served yams and they smelled just awful and they were mushy and gross and :ick: she wouldn’t let me leave the table until I ate them so I shoved them in my mouth and well, you can imagine what yams look like when they come back out.
Yeah, totally gross. Haven’t gone near them since. And no amount of coaxing on yours or my husbands parts will do any good. I won’t budge on this one. :teehee:
I was just wondering if there were any other people out there as picky or nearly as picky as me and if they had tried these special fake potatoes. Thats all.
Doesn’t sound good to me at all. As long as you don’t try to see it as a replacement, but more as a whole new dish it might be fine. Sort of a mashed cauliflower type dish.
Hey, no worries. Everyone’s got a food they feel that way about, I’m sure. Mine is avocados. I know the vast majority of people love them and think I’m strange, but I can’t stand them! Blech.
I’ve made mashed cauliflower and I like it just fine. I added a little S&P, parmesan cheese and butter and it’s yummy. Not the same texture as potatoes, a little thinner and more creamy when mashed. Also, from what I remember, I put the caulis in the blender. I don’t think they mash well. Ends up being more of a puree than a mash.
Here’s Martha Stewart’s take on them:
Give it a try.
Love mashed cauliflower! This is meant to resemble the texture of lumpy mashed potatoes, not whipped potatoes, so there will be chunks. Steam it, get yourself some soft cheese spread with herbs, add it to the cauliflower and mash away. Yummy! My husband even likes it and he won’t normally eat cauliflower. Score!
