Bernat® baby sport staggered squares blanket (to knit) #458

My niece is having twins and I’m working on a few things for her. I found a really cute knitted blanket pattern and thought it would be easy but right out the gate I have a question :tap:

What does this mean: INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 133 sts. Working back
and forth across needle in rows,
proceed as follows:
Work 7 rows in garter st (knit
every row), noting 1st row is WS
and inc 8 sts evenly across last
row. 141 sts.

where do I increase at? what sort of increase do I use? Help please

Thanks,
Wendy

When you work the final row, you can do pretty much any increase, M1, or kfb, evenly spaced (or so) across the row.

You could start with an increase, end with an increase and increase about every 20 stitches between. It doesn’t have to be exact.

Thank you I just wanted to make sure before I got so far into the pattern only to realize I needed to rip it back UGH!

Went to Bernat site, may have to phone Canada.
Having trouble with 9th row, last 6-7 stitches.
When I slip a stitch and then knit, I turn to do
10th row, and see what looks like a missed stitch.
On circular needle. How to do last stitches of
9th row is what I am asking.
yon - knit 5??
I don’t have piece in front of me.
Or just skip yon and knit to end??
I have wasted half ball of yarn already.
I hate to give up.
Thx for any help.

Can you post just Row 9? It may be that there was a dec - sl 1 k1, psso - and you forgot to pass the sl st over.

GM!!

K5.P1.*yon.K3.Sl1.K1.psso.K4.P1. Rep from * to last 5 sts. K5.
thx
I did do psso, but yon at end of row gives me trouble.
I read to not necessarily believe pattern.
Beginning of row looks good.
thx again

There’s no YO at the end of the row - K5, p1, then the repeat is YO, k3 skp, k4 p1, YO, k3, skp, k4 p1 etc and you end with k5. So maybe you did forget to slip the sl st over somewhere in there.

Thx-
I figured it was me.
Will get right back to it.
Let you know how it goes.
Thx again.

I knit a lot of lace and often find that I’ve forgotten to do a YO or pass the sl st over. If you do the sl k p as ssk, you’ll be less likely to forget it because you slip the 2 sts separately then put the L needle into the front of them and knit together.

Me again!

1st row:
(RS) K5. P1. *K4. k2tog. K3 yrn. P1. Rep from * to last 5 sts. K5.
I am being extremely careful with this-my question is: Does every
row have to be completed fully before last 5 stitches?
I get to P1, and cannot get it in-go right from K3 to last 5 sts>
Same with some other rows.

If you are asking if you should be able to do the repeat all the way through before the K5 at the end the answer is yes. Your pattern is a multiple of 10+11. IOW the things you repeat between the *'s add up to 10 stitches being used and on either side of the *'s the stitches add up to 11, 6 at the beginning and 5 at the end. So you should be able to work the 6, then repeat the 10 across (completing the last repeat), and have 5 left to knit.

It works that way all the time (I didn’t look at every row, but quite a few), you do the 6, repeat 10 across and finish with 5 and they should all fit in there perfectly.

Count your stitches and make sure you have the right number to start with. That can sometimes be the problem. You want 141. Then it is easy to miss something along the way. You could try putting stitch markers after every repeat and see if that gets you on track. Your 10 stitches between markers should never vary.

I was just coming to try and delete my last blog, when I read
the last comment.
My blanket looks good, but have to stop before end of repeat
(in the middle or whatever) to do 5 K.
My blanket has been counted and counted every step of the way.
Right now it shows 3 holes slanted to right in orderly manner.
Am up to 10th row.
In ninth row, I got to K4, and had to stop to knit 5.
I now have 126 st. counting yon. :eyes:
Ready to cry.

I’m sorry you have feel ready to cry. Things like this happen.

Every once in a while I get clever and use some computerese abbreviations I’ve picked up. IOW means “in other words”. Sorry about that. Most people know more of this stuff than I do and I get away with it.

I,m want to knit at least a 36 inch baby sport square blanke calls c.o. 133st. & gauge od 18st=4inch. I,m getting 16 half st.=4inch on 7ndle. But Bernat baby sport yarn I have calls for 6ndle. On label. Pattern calls for Bernat baby sport yarn that I have on beginning each rw. Is knit 6 & end of each rw. Knit 5. In between 1st. & end is repeat of pattern that is 10 stitches. Can I add to make wider how. Staggered squares calls for 7ndle. To go a larger would make blanket too loose.

Do you like the knit fabric in your swatch on the 7 needle? If so, at 16.5sts/4inches (you swatched in pattern stitch?), the blanket is already going to be a bit bigger, maybe about 32 inches. That’s all to the good since you want the blanket larger anyway.
A repeat of 10sts is about 2.5 inches so you can increase by as many repeats as you would like. If you increase by 2 repeats (20sts) the size should be around 37 inches, for example.
This pattern:

If someone could look at this on Ravelry as now not sure that 1st 6 stitches & last 5 stiches that 10 stitches in between as on row 11 is different in middle. I want to do 7ndle, & make a 36 inch blanket since I get confuse on increasing, what do I do , also on row 11 it starts with 1st. Stitches as5 & last as 6.

Hi Stricker, the pattern has a garter stitch border that is 5sts on each side. That continues up all the rows. To make the pattern “stagger”, the 10 stitch repeat shifts. There are stitches inside the borders that make this happen. Some of the projects on Ravelry show the blanket flattened out so that you can see the shift.
Try the pattern on a small swatch to help see how this happens.

Thanks so much, so if I add 20 more stitches between the repeats will that do?

That’ll do it.

Hi, I’m doing bernat baby sport staggered blanket I’m stuck doing (Row 3) which is k5 P1 *k4 k2tog k3 yrn P1 rep from * to last 5 sts k5 and I got 6 extra stitches left so I don’t know if I mess up doing inc stitch (Row) 7 in garter stich?
