Same here about trying to miss the heat! I will be the crazed brunette chasing her 3 year old around the store trying to keep all the yard from falling on her head:-)
Did you girls go already? I would love to meet up with you there sometime! I have so far resisted visiting HCW because I know my wallet will not survive the trip… but I’ve been knitting since January and it’s getting harder and harder to resist! I have never fondled Malabrigo either and I reeeeaaally want to!
I have not made it down there yet, I was thinking close to 9:30ish…
Oh well, I hope you had fun! I’ll have to head down there on my lunch break one of these days.
SO! I went! Malabrigo is just a buttery and dreamy as everyone raves about. And it’s not crazy expensive! I got a little for my swap partner:)
I woke up at 345am this morning, couldn’t sleep, so I knitted on my DW Scarf. Went back to bed around 800, then overslept, haha!
Ended up going around 1130. I bought 5 balls (some Intenso and some Emerald Blue) of the Malabrigo, 2 hanks of Debbie Bliss Donegal Tweed in burnt orange to finish up a Feather and Fan shawl (I like a heavy warm shawl), and 2 hanks of Tahiki Donegal Tweed (new to the store) in a lovely dark grey for hat and scarf for my BF.
The very nice girl who helped me out at HCW told me that 3 others had arrived ahead of me asking for Malabrigo…haha! I told her we were talking about it here…I’m glad they had quite a bit on hand, have a feeling it’s going to go fast!
I wish I knew the best way to get back back and forth to Buda, though…that intersection at Oltorf and Congress is…well…“yucky” I guess I’d call it…way too many pedestrians and panhandlers in the street, not even paying attention to the “walk”, “don’t walk” lights…a lot of construction, too. Maybe I’ll go up to Riverside next time, then get onto IH-35.
I bought the Curcao, a mixture of greens, yellows and blues and the Amaroso, very intense reds. I plan to go back! You talked to the girl with the long brown hair? Did she offer to ball it for you? I had that done:-) I bought a hank of Alchemy Waterlily a couple of weeks ago from there and in my ignorance thought I could do it myself. It is sitting in a knot on my desk…When I have NOTHING else to do I work on it.
Yay for Austin rainy weather! No watering of the lawn needed. We have a lawn to take care of again
We just moved into our house last Friday and I love, love, love it. My son started 3rd grade this week…talk about change! Then we started getting furniture since we now have rooms to fill.
I did manage to find my knitting and my yarn but I haven’t done more than 7 rows of the project I have OTN. Can you believe it? My fingers will forget what to do when we’re all settled in and I get back my evening knitting time.
So…I haven’t ventured over to HCW yet. How much is a skein of the Malabrigo? I’m thinking of making a belated b-day present out of some if I can swing the moolah.
Recommendations for Austin (NW or SW preferred) LYS? Beyond the Hobby Lobby, Hancock and JoAnn’s?
Hill Country Weavers!
It’s on Congress near Fran’s Burgers, Guero’s, Continental Club…umm…wait, here’s the link!
http://www.hillcountryweavers.com/main.php
Everyone’s so nice (and knowledgable) there, always new things to look at, LOTS of books…you’ll love it…and all the yarn is fantastic! Addis needles are my favorite things right now.
Oh, btw, phisch, the Malabrigo was 10.20 when I went by on Wednesday…it’s very nice…still trying to find a pattern I want to do, though.
Ahhh…rainy weather and 5 days off for me…guess I’ll be doing a lot of knitting, :yay:
Hi Stacy, I live in Manor…not too far from Bastrop. I’ve been to Bluebonnet and it’s OK. MY fav LYS is still Hill Country Weavers-they’re hard to beat. I knit mostly at home, but I go out occasionally to knit. If you’d like to knit with someone, let me know. I’m working on a lacy shawl at the moment, and Xmas gifts!
Okay, so I found that the Bluebonnet Yarn Shoppe is in Cedar Park (where I am) so I went there on Saturday with my 2.5 year old daughter. (I’m still hoping to stop in to Hill Country Weavers sometime soon.)
The minute I opened the door to this LYS, my daughter summed up my thougthts when she exclaimed (at the top of her lungs), “Ooooohhhhh! Mommy, it’s sooooo BEAUUUUU-tiful!”
I wanted to just dump all the yarn into a big pile and jump in like it was a pile of leaves. OMG! I could have stayed there ALL DAY. UNFORTUNATELY, my bonus check didn’t come in yet (STILL) so I didn’t get to purchase anything but I found about a MILLION differernt yarns I would love to knit. That was a dangerous place to visit! I’m doomed… Hee hee.
Thank you guys for the suggestions! My husband, however, is LESS than thrilled with my discovery of such a store. :roflhard:
Hmm, I need some new yarn for the oddball shawl I’ll be getting soon… sounds like a trip to HCW is in order! Anyone want to join me?
Oooooh WHEN???
I think I’ll run to HCW some time soon. I thought I saw someone’s pic of a clapotis in malabrigo. And I have a bday present to make
I got a local paper the other day and it had a fiber arts store in Wimberley. Is that far from south Austin?
Laura, I work FT so it will have to be a lunch time trip… hopefully sometime this week. Got any free lunch times?
phisch, I read about that fiber arts store too…on their website: http://www.theoldoaksranch.com/fiber/index.html
Sounds awesome!
I’d love to go to HCW, but it’d have to be on a weekend, or on a Wednesday (my day off). I spent way too much last week on all that Malabrigo, though, haha!
BTW, I knitted up 2 hats in the Malabrigo using these patterns: http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/kpatt11.htm
http://www.hjsstudio.com/hat.html
I’ll post pics soon, they both came up very nice (a bit small, though). It did take a while to get used to the softness of the yarn…it kept slipping off the slick Addi Turbo needles a bit too easy, haha! The dpns were very tricky, too!
Have a great day, everyone!
I am normally free right around lunch! I just have to be home by 2:30…so that I can be home before my older daughter gets home from school.
How about if we plan it for Wednesday next week… that way we can all three go? Martha, I can’t wait to see pics of your hats!
Sounds good to me! Noonish?
