Any Sock KAL

that orange is beautiful … good thing i have a stash to knit from :teehee:

thank you all for your kind words! I knit half a row today and had to stop. Can’t knit through a burning sensation in my arm!:wall:

Hi everybody!! Dotty invited me to join the party…I am ready to try socks!

I can’t officially start until next weekend - DS’s bday and first day of school this week, and oh yeah, payday! - but any advice you have would be appreciated. I have to get dpn’s, I’ve already got the yarn - Trekking in a neat self patterning blue/brown combo. The socks are not going to match each other, but I think that’s cool. SO - metal vs. bamboo - what do you all think? I have used larger bamboo dpn’s but I was kicking around the idea of addi turbos b/c I absolutely adore the addi circs that I have. Also, can you suggest a good basic kids sock pattern? DS is 8 and wears a size 1 shoe.

:!!!: You, you, you sock enabler, you!

:roflhard:

*adding to the queue in Ravelry…:out:

I’m soooooo happy!! I’m soooooo excited! Yippeee!! :woohoo: I’m making great progress on my sock. I can’t believe how this is all coming together. It truly is magic like Silver writes in her instructions. I did the slipping of the stitches wrong on the heel flap, so it looks different than it really should. But, I’m still very happy with the outcome and now I know what I need to do on my second pair, so it doesn’t happen. It really doesn’t look that bad. There are also 2 small hole to the left of the top tip of one of my gussets, but I am still incredibily satisfied with everything thus far. I just hope I don’t screw it up. Knock on wood. I will try and post a pic tonight when I get home so you can see my progess and maybe take a pic of the holes, so you can maybe help me figure out what went wrong there.

Dotty, Those socks are looking fantastic! I love the color.

Jeanius80, That pattern is fabulous. I can’t wait to get into more intricate patterns for socks.

DivaGirl, Welcome to the group. I just joined as well and am really excited about knitting socks now.

Welcome divagirl :woot:

For first time socks you might want to go with bamboos they are less slippery… unless you are used to knitting with dpns…hereis a free pattern for little boy’s socks on the lion brand site… I was given thispattern when I first started knitting socks it was so helpful… gives every size I need in any weight of yarn…

Ve~:woot:I can’t wait to see your first sock and so excited to see you so excited…:woot:

I know…I go look at it then I’m like, do you know how much sock yarn you already own??? you have enough to knit socks for many many years… but it’s so pretty… we will see how long I can hold out or if someone beats me to it…:teehee:

There she is ! :waving:
Welcome, divagirl !

You can find a plethera of children’s and basic sock patterns in a search, but lot’s of people on this thread seem to have started with Silver’s sock tutorials…this one has been recommended many times…
http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm

Since you’re using a sock yarn, but want it to fit a child, I would probably cast on , maybe , 44 stitches, or 48, knit a few rounds and see if that will fit his calf above the ankle.

I’ve just switched to the magic loop method, knitting socks on one long circular, but if you want to start out on dpns like I did, I like the metal ones. Some are pointier than others, and some are slicker than others, but I put too much tension on a needle during some of the trickier maneuvers, so I don’t trust myself not to break those skinny bamboos. Since you’re used to dpns, you’ll probably be happiest with the Addi’s…but don’t buy a bunch of different sizes , since you’ll almost surely switch to the magicloop method eventually. It really solves the whole ‘track’ dilemna. Do you have any Addi circulars in the smaller dimension sock sizes, that are atleast 32 inches long?

:waving:Hi all! I’m actually in the cabled sock KAL, but thought I would lurk a bit here. I really reccommend bamboo dpns for 1st time sock knitters. It can be very scary with metal when the stitches start to slip off the ends, and bamboos are great for holding them in place.
I also recommend Silver for any sock knitting questions. I have recently done a complicated cabled sock, but didn’t like how the pattern said to do the heel turning and slipped stiches, so I did it how Silver said and I love it. Even if it doesn’t keep with the “pattern” however it works out for you is good!:muah:

I recommend magic loop! Unless you’re experienced with circular knitting on DPN’s…

Veronica, with all of the socks I’ve knitted, I only figured out the slipped stitches with my next to last ones ! And I finally figured out how to straighten a slipped stitch out later, if I look and find a twisted one a few rows down ! I’m also just now learning how to avoid those holes at the top of the gusset. When they tell you to pick up an extra stitch or two, I was picking up through the bar that stretches between the needles, but that just makes another hole. I’ve been picking up one of the sides of a ‘v’, and knitting through it, and things are looking tighter. The funny thing is that I seem to learn something new with every sock I make.

Right now, I’m wondering about short-rows, as they pertain to sock heels and toes. Does it matter whether you move the working yarn BEFORE or AFTER slipping the next stitch? I’ve read it both ways, and I just made this toe with the best looking short rows I’ve done yet, and I did some things differently, including twisting the wraps and the knit stitch before I knit them with that stitch. I guess it just takes some experimentation, but I wondered if I should
(a) bring the yarn forward, slip the stitch, take the yarn back, and slip the stitch back…or
COLOR=darkorange slip the next stitch, bring the yarn forward, slip the stitch back, and move the yarn back?

Check this out…someone, in another section of this forum, shared a link to sock knitting videos that are on YouTube…

I haven’t watched them all, but they might be helpful to help a beginner visualize ! I know that I could never print out silver’s tutorials, because it would just use up an ink cartridge for me !

Alright, so I just now finished packing up everything for the camping trip. It’s almost 2am here on the west coast! :sleepy: I am tired and know I have to go to bed, but I don’t think I will able to fall asleep. I have been running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off for the last 4 hours and everything is packed and ready to go. I will not be able to post my pic of my sock tonight, but I am taking it on the road and I printed the tutorial to take along. I’m kinda looking forward to knitting by a campfire. I’ll talk to everyone soon. -Ve

I totally understand what you mean. that’s a great pattern! Is it an onlinepattern? I’d really love to make that once.

May i join in?? I started two toe-up socks magic loop using silver’s tutorial! this is my second pair of socks and really whant to learn to knit two at the same time!

:happydance: Welcome Sig!!! I still have to try it 2 socks at the same time… :happydance:

Hi Mulderknitter, feel free to join us and come out of lurkdom :teehee:

dotty, I don’t think it would matter to much… but I do b…I’ve only did a total of 3 short row heel socks though so I could be wrong :teehee:… My first short row it was in the pattern so I just did what it told me too… the next sock was out of the 25 Favorite socks book… the last sock I followed was out of More Sensational Knitted Socks and found it easier to do and thought it looked better… less holes on the purl side… my knit side looks good its the side that I purl back on that leaves holes

Ve~ Enjoy your camping trip!!! :happydance:

Has anyone tried hersock patterns? I really like the Kaleidoscope, May Day, and Rain forest… well I like them all…:teehee:

I also like this one

Finished the heel flap, the heel, and the gusset decreases on my 2nd Monkey last night!

Going to go see the MIL this weekend…shes not doing so well, shes had a nasty infection for last few months, losing weight, and the Drs are stumped…the “C” word has been discussed with my FIL, and there is a biopsy next week, so we are taking the kids to see her this weekend, because she is terrified that it may be the last time that she can see them.

I’m taking my Monkey socks to finish, and if my feet werent so much larger than hers, Id give them to her there.

Welcome sig ! :waving: Come on in ! I love your sense of adventure, trying two at once, already !

lieke, that’s a pattern that mommamonkey designed herself, I think. It’s so fun to do !

veronikaj, I wouldn’t want to cut in on a romantic outing, but boy, wouldn’t it be fun if this sock knitting group could all join you for one evening’s knitting around that campfire. Sounds better in theory than in actuality, I guess, as I always have to have a lamp shining over my shoulder when I knit. You guys would think I was shunning you when I turned my back to the fire…:roflhard:

Oh, Papergirl, I’m holding out good thoughts for the mother-in-law ! So scary !
And I know what you mean on the size of your socks…my feet are so much bigger than my daughter’s, that I always have to decide to begin with, just who the socks are going to be for ! I’m surprised that hand-knit socks are such a custom-fit, rather than being general sizing, like store-boughts.

dustinac, my two sides look different too ! And probably no two pairs I do are alike, as I try something different on each pair, trying to get them more alike.
