Any Sock KAL 2

:blooby: Good Morning Socksters!
:wall: I keep getting errors with my internet this morning it must not like -11 temps either…windchill we feel like -24…so the kids our home today and fighting…JD is home today 'cause his car was like no way, I’m not starting.

Sile~I like to use the Sherman short row heel, you are ready to now start your cuff pattern  …The schools here call too but they wait till around 9 when the kids are already in bed…so then Isaiah wakes up early with do I have school? then he can’t get back to sleep

Lieke~Take it easy, and I can’t wait to see the avast :yay:

Julie~I hope Jacob is feeling better today and the girls didn’t get it.

Gina~How are you feeling? I hope your feeling better how is dh doing

jess~Stay warm! :happydance:

Carey~ I can’t wait to see the falling in love socks :yay:

Christine~How is you shoulder feeling today

Sue~Have you gotten anymore snow? Ours finally stopped yesterday :happydance:

Lisa~I hope you got the school all sorted out! :yay:

Chris~JD was telling me last night he wants to order some Haggis for the 25th…I told him I wasn’t fixing it…he says you just boil it and hope it doesn’t explode :oo: . He also brought up moving to Scotland again last night he would love to do that…I’m not sure about me though

Hi everyone, hope your staying warm out there!

Nothing much here but trying to stay warm, of course all the windows and doors are blocked so we are using lights a lot and heaters a lot…I worked on the snowbird mittens last night. I need a glove pattern for the fair in Sept so if you see a pattern out there that is like WOW let me know  .

I hope you guys have a great day of knitting :blooby:

Wow, it’s been a while!

I hope everyone had a happy new year! We were up North (Huntsville) at New Year’s and there was no power, but we had a generator. Then the generator blew up and it was -30 outside. It got pretty cold out there. We still had fun though. We went ice fishing, toboganing, snow mobiling, and just read by the fire. It was great, but now we’ve been back for a while and it’s been back to the grind. Working crazy hours and otherwise staying inside! It’s SO cold here.

Dustina- Are the kids home because it’s so cold? They don’t shut the schools down here for that unless the pipes freeze!

Lieke- Sorry about your ankle! I broke mine when I was 6 and it was not fun. I can’t wait to see your Avast.

Jess- Hope you’re staying warm. I understand about pants needing insulation. My work pants have none either and it can get mighty chilly.

Julie- How was the in-laws dinner? What was the microwave/fire story?

Gina- Want to come visit me? It’s -18 and feels like -28 with the wind chill. You literally cannot stay outside.

Christine- Sounds like the DH’s birthday was lovely. How’s Boots enjoying the cold?

Sue- Staying in and staying warm I hope?

Carey- Ohh, Falling in Love socks? Those sound cute…pattern? I’ve never used Socks that Rock (but I want to!). It sounds like they have used vinegar to seal the colour, but it’s not working. I hate when yarn bleeds!

So I am doing the Alzheimer Society Walk for Memories on January 31 to support my grandma and Josh’s grandma. If you’re interested in donating at all, here’s the link to my page.

The following pictures are of me ice fishing (VERY bundled up), my at the bottom of the toboganing hill- you can see the lake behind, it’s frozen and the tracks are from snowmobiles, and the third picture is the ice on my window this morning.

Ann~I’m glad you guys had fun! It looks fun and COLD! Yeah we don’t usually see those temps here so to us it’s very very cold :teehee: …so they keep them home, plus some of the roads are still trying to dig out from the snow. We had a big snow storm last winter but usually we don’t see this much snow in one falling either…so when it hits it kinda shuts a lot of stuff down. I had to scrap my front door and kitchen window today…I’ve never had to do that…Roo was like mommy there is Ice in the house…

Good Monring,

Knitgal… Looks like you all had a great time.

Lieke … I’m getting excited just to see the FO. I can’t wait anymore…:teehee:

Gina… It has gotten pretty darn cold by you as well.

Well I was going to go to the LYS to get a new pair of needles today but DH had to take my car to work :waah: His truck did not want to start. At 6 am it was -19 windchill -37. . We are currently at -13 with a high of 7 for later on today. Tomorrow itis to get up to 29. I sure hope so. Ok… off to work on my sock. Will post picks later today.

happy knitting and all stay warm.

Fibernut…Glad to see you. Hope all is well with you and Mike. It has been along time since I have seen you on here. I hope you had a great x-mas and Happy New Year.

Dustina: my shoulder is a bit better. I’ve been taking Ibruprofen and it seems to be helping. It’s not nearly as swollen as it was the other day.

Ann: Boots HATES the cold. He will only go out long enough to pee or do his business and then he runs for the door again. He is my little whoosy dog! Looks like you had a good New Year trip. If that ice is on the inside of your window then you have a major problem with your windows!

Here’s a picture of my DH on his birthday, at the bakery I took him to. He got a cappuccino with Baileys in it and a nice piece of cake. When we went to leave they would not let us pay the bill, said the owner said there was NO bill today! Yay!!! They have a huge big screen TV at the bakery and Frank always watches it when he goes there. This picture is before they brought out the singing girls and the cake!!!

silegose I find that I often lose count going back and forth with short rows, short attention span?, As the video shows the idea is to built a triangle.

By always knitting fewer stitches each row. You then pick up the stitches once you reach the middle stitches that make the heel cap.

You do not have to wrap stitches when you turn. Wrapping is done to add extra yarn at stress points and prevent holes. My method for wrapping is to move the yarn into position for the next row before slipping the last stitch knit. Knit across to the last two stitches turn the sock for the return purl row. Move the yarn to the front of the sock ready to purl. With the yarn in front slip the last stitch knit. This traps the yarn between two stitches and the needle. Now purl to the last two stitches, turn, move yarn to back and slip a stitch.

On the return, where you pick up the extra stitches that you did not knit the first half of the heel. When you come to the stitch to pick up you are going to knot 2 together. You can just K2tog or you can slip the needle through the stitch and the wrap and the next stitch. If you picked up the wrap then you are really knitting three together, stitch-wrap-stitch.

Don’t make it hard just follow the directions/count and let the heel appear. This is hard for me I want to know why and how before I do and make things harder than they are.

I have never had haggis, but I know you can order Haggis in a can. Here in south central PA they have hog maw. I had some last night. PA Dutch casserole. Take the stomach of one pig stuff with cabbage, potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Bake and enjoy.

I did. That’s funny-sounds like something we would do too. Maybe you dreamed that because we’re all like family on this thread?

You can do it! :yay:

The inlaws for dinner was fine, however I have a nuwaveoven (that does tenderloin to die for & I have a regular real oven too) and it said you can cook a frozen chicken in it, so I tried, said to cook it 25min per pound-2 hours later it still was raw looking in the middle; so we popped it in the smoky microwave for 5 min and finished it-then dinner was good, maybe because everyone was starving :roflhard: .
OK so the microwave/almost fire story…I was drying my hair yesterday am the kids were eating breakfast & Dh was on the pc; next thing he knows the micro has been on & he turns to look in the kitchen to see if I’m warming something up, nope. THen he realized there was smoke pooring out of it & opened it up with 29.49 min left & inside was a chared 1/2 piece of toast & it was full of smoke, said it took a while before it all cleared out so that he could see waht was in it. Jacob’s toast got cold so he put it in for 30 seconds, which ended up being 30 min & he was watching cartoons waiting for it to beep. :aww: He was very scared & sorry & teary when Brian got onto him & told him he has to ask permission or for help before using the micro. So now it’s ok. We had to open the doors/windows (30something outside) to get rid of the nausiating smoke smell. So there you have it, toast burns in the mircrowave in less than 4 minutes. Another one of life’s lessons.

HOLY COW THAT’S COLD :thud: Today we’re supposed to get to the mid 50’s-all week in fact! I’m so glad; I’m not one for the cold weather.

He looks very handsome. And no bill :woot: life is good!

Hi everyone else! I had to use quotes today because the girls are insisting on bugging me for the few minutes it takes me to check things on the pc. I just finished paying th ebills for the rest of the month! Now the next 2 weeks pay checks should remain untouched & maybe we can pay the mortgage on the 1st, fingerscrossed
So tomorrow I start classes & still haven’t read the first chapter in the bio book; better do that today-also didnt have any time yesterday to spin  or knit  So maybe today I can do that.
Hey have any of you read, “The Shack” it’s fantastic! I bought it on i-tunes as an audio book because I know I wont be able to read it (no time) so now I can listen to that while I knit, or drive to classes. I’m only about 1/8 of the way through it, it’s an 8 hour book, and I’ve listened for only 1.5 hours & I’m glued-very well read & written. (I’m not a bookworm either)…anyway get it if you can, it’s fantastic!

Ann: Good to see you around again. Glad you had a good time despite the cold.

Julie: That day I had been looking at the cute picture of your children and I had arranged to have our alarm system checked. I guess that is how the dream mix came about.

Christine: Glad your shoulder is feeling a bit better.

Dustina: We have not had snow for a few days, other than a dusting, but it is so cold. I braved it today and walked to the store, so I took this picture of the dirty mound of snow at the end of the street. This is what I hate and it takes such a long time to melt.

Julie, Your toast in the microwave story brought back memories! We had a babysitter who put mac n cheese in the micro and set it for 30 min instead of 3. It smelled every time we used the microwave for MONTHS!:roflhard:

Jess, tights or long-johns under the pants?

Sile, glad you figured out the heel! WTG! Go ahead and start your rib whenever you want!

Lieke, sometimes on knits, it’s better to sew the zipper in by hand. Hand-knits tend to stretch out under a machine’s foot and end up looking really sloppy. It’s a pain to do, but after all the work you’ve put in, you want it to look GREAT! It may also help to knit with a very fine gauge, a backing piece to cover the back of the zipper. Know what I mean?

Dustina, I’m feeling quite a bit better. Still using the nebulizer, which helps. Moving to Scotland?!?! COOL!

Ann, welcome back! We missed you! Sounds like you had fun, but Brrrrr!!! I think I’ll pass on the visit! Since moving here almost 20 years ago, my blood has thinned considerably! I’ve lived in WA state, MI and IA, so I do know cold–Iowa was especially bad with wind-chills of -60 some days! I don’t miss them! Great pics! Thanks for posting!

Christine, I would be right there with Boots! He’s no woosy dog! He’s a SMART dog!

Sue, that is one big pile of snow! Brrrr!

I ran errands with DD today. So nice to hang out with her before she goes back on Monday. Now we’re going to make Imperial chicken for dinner. Yum!

Stay warm and happy knitting!

Sue that would make sense. That’s a mound of snow, no a mountain!

I finished Dh’s 1st sock! Now to co for the second…Can you believe it only took 4 days of knitting to get it done? I’ll try to post pics later-once I make sure the sucker fits his foot. I’m always leary of kitchnering the toe, jsut incase it’s a bit to short/long. But it measures up with his other sock just fine, & our feet are almost the same size. Wierd huh?

I have leggings around here somewhere… usually I’m not outside long enough and once I go inside it feels wierd and annoys me. If I’m going to be outside for an extended period in sub-zero temps, I have a whole closet full of cold-weather gear I can break out. My boots are rated to -40 or something ridiculous like that. Unfortunately, the last time my family got new snow pants, I think I was about 12 and needless to say, they no longer fit.

O come on, you can’t wear the same pants you had when you were 12?! jk :roflhard: I just had to give you some grief.

Christine he is a good looking man. I like his choice in facial hair.

I’ve spent the evening in the frog pond. I started seaming my Hey Teach and couldn’t get the fronts and backs to match. I had forgotten that I was making the fronts bigger than the back.:wall: To get them to match up, I decided to frog back to the last armhole decreases on the back. Oh well. I’m enjoying the pattern so much that I don’t mind doing it again! It’s a pattern I highly recommend! Just get your gauge right first.:teehee:

Chris, you and Christine’s DH could be brothers!

Jess, I don’t like how they make my clothes fit, but I also don’t like being cold! and your temps are Brrrrrr!

Anyone have an easy beginner sock pattern? I want to learn to make socks with heels. I have a sock on DPNs, but the pattern is confusing to me. I have about an inch of the ribbing done. I bought some sock yarn from Michaels whenever it was the they had it for 50% off. I also have some of the stretchy sock yarn.

Any and all help will be appreciated. I’ve only been knitting for about 3 years, but feel like it’s time to do something other than scarves and dishcloths.

DebbieJ

Hi Debbie and welcome to our Any Sock KAL. I posted an answer for you on your other post. Good luck and enjoy your sock knitting!

Good morning, everyone!

Dustina, Chris and I would LOVE to move to Scotland! I lived in Stirling, Scotland for 6 months in college, and absolutely fell in love.

Debbie, welcome to the KAL! I’m guessing Christine pointed you to Silver’s Sock Tutorial in your other thread- I highly recommend that one. It’s at www.cometosilver.com

Hope everyone else is having a lovely weekend! I am FINALLY, after more than 2 months, getting my new washer and dryer today! No more hanging every single thing outside! I think we’re going to keep hanging sheets and towels out, though- saves energy, and they smell lovely too.

Carey: that’s where I sent her. As far as I am concerned it is the ONLY way to learn! I’m glad you finally got your washer and dryer.

DH is just in the shower and then he is going to the post office to mail my CPH to Gina, and get himself some cough syrup because he is barking yet again! I’m going to shower while he is gone. Then we are going to Boots’ obedience class and on from there to my DD’s house for another birthday supper for DH. He doesn’t know it’s a birthday party, he thinks it is just a visit. This time he’s getting his favourite, Lemon Meringue Pie. I’ll take my camera!

Happy Saturday everyone!

Josh and I got up and went to see a house this morning. His mom and dad came with us for parental support since we clearly don’t know the right questions to ask. It was fun. It’s an older house built in 1910 and it would be perfect for us, but we can’t buy just yet. We mostly went because it was a good learning experience and because we fell in love with the house when we saw it online.

Christine- Have fun at your DD’s house. Careful driving home though, we’re getting more snow!

Carey- Glad you got your new washer and dryer! What a pain not to have them. If we put things out to dry right now they would freeze!

Debbie- Welcome to the sock KAL. We don’t talk about socks that much, but we’ll help if we can! If you’ve been knitting 3 years you can make socks- some of us haven’t even been knitting that long!

Gina- Boo about frogging! Oh well, when you spend that much time on a project you want it to be perfect.

I have to work in 2 hours and I don’t feel like going. It seems that I have been working a lot of closing shifts and they get really annoying. You don’t start until 1:30 or 2 and then you’re there until 10 or so. Your day feels very broken up. Oh well- that’s life!
