Oh, my dear friends, I’m SO EXCITED I COULD CRY!
I’ve been working on the Portuguese Knitting. IT’S EASY AND I CAN DO IT!!! I haven’t done it for long periods yet, but I CAN DO IT WITHOUT PAIN!!!
I did have to figure my own way to do it. I have 3 bulging disks in my neck, so after a few minutes with the yarn around my neck, I knew I’d have to figure something else out. The video says they have pins with hooks on them you can get, and I thought I might make one, but I was afraid a pin would make a big hole in whatever I was wearing. So I looked in my knitting bag and found a stitch holder, hooked it through my yarn and then onto my bra strap. (Sorry, Chris and Steve and any other dudes on here; you’ll either have to borrow something or put the yarn around your neck.:roflhard:)
As you can see in the pic, this WORKED!!! I’m SO EXCITED.
You DO have to cross your needles in the front for knitting. That’s the only thing I have to remind myself of when I knit. BTW, purling is SO FAST!!! I’d almost rather purl a whole sweater with this method! Y’all HAVE to try this! We’ll all be keeping up with Sue soon!
So far, so good! I have splints for my thumbs, which helps keep them in the right (curved) position. I’m going to go knit now, and see how long I can do it!:cheering:
Praise be to God…it’s about time the pendulum swung the other way, and the internet was used for good ! What a network of friends we have here, all sharing and growing !
Gina, You may need to help me out on that method, I seriously tried to get a swatch done, but I wanted to finish my sock first so just finished, drat. Then I took pictures and then I saw you had found an even better method, Thanks Sue! I am so glad it is working for you, and after struggling with my old combo method today for purling:gah: , I’m really ready for a better way! I am making supper right now (kinda), and then hope to snatch a few minutes to give it a try. I am SO excited it seems to be fairly easy to learn?
Here’s what I struggled with today, and finished - one more to go and maybe I’ll even try to knit the next one with the new method if I can…
Siameezer, your sock looks GREAT! :cheering:
Yes, the method is easy to learn! :woot: I’ve struggled to learn continental knitting (never really got it) and this just clicked. Of course, I watched the videos Sue posted last night dozens of times and then when I found these videos today, I watched them over and over. I didn’t try to START a swatch. I just added to one I already had going. I would recommend you start by learning to purl. It truly is the easiest method I’ve EVER seen for purling! The knit stitch takes a little more finagling and hand work, but once you figure out to put your needle in from the bottom of the stitch and cross the needle in FRONT, you’re on your way.
When i get to the separation point for the sleeves on the Green Gables sweater I’m making, I think I’m going to turn my work around and purl the rest of the thing. I’ll have to figure out increases and decreases using the purl stitch instead of the knit stitch, but y’all will help, right?:flirt:
Happy Birthday DUSTINA, CAITLIN, BAILEY, and Lieke’s MOM!
Gina, that is AWESOME! I’m so glad you found a knitting method that works for you with no pain! Maybe I can get a demonstration in a few weeks?
OK, I have to get dressed, we’re going to drop the kids off with my parents in a few minutes and go see The Mikado! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
Happy birthday to… umm… EVERYBODY! (Must have been something in the water.)
I had heard of those, yes… I suppose I’ll try making a pair at some point. (I’m apprehensive about getting the shape right… that’s the kind of thing that tends to give me trouble on these kinds of projects.)
I like them!!!
Thank you! I don’t know what happened to the photo before… it’s been there on my SmugMug account since I posted it. I know what you mean about the “sheen”… the flash bounced off them in a weird way. I’m going to shot a better photo later. (I also didn’t like the focus.)
OK, dinner is done (I made chicken and dumplings, a DH favorite with lime shortbread bars and icecream for desert- stuffed now!) I am re-reading your post Gina and already have a question - could you please tell me if your stitch holder you’re using on your bra strap is a closed loop or a hook type? And could you give me more detail how you put it on and hooked the yarn with it? Thanks!
Also, I forgot to say Great Socks, Sue! I really hope to knit nearly as fast as some of you sometime soon!
:woot: I got a package today :woot: YARN PORN TO FOLLOW TOMORROW! after a photo shoot in daylight to show off the amazing colors of this stuff!
You “must” check out Woolgirl! Wow. She may not have much in stock right now, as she’s having a big sale today and is getting cleaned out, but worth a look anyhow. She included some woolwash that doesn’t need rinsing and a beautiful stitch marker made from a blown glass bead and my yarns were wrapped up like beautiful presents! Also, I can’t believe how fast she sent it all! :cheering: So now I REALLY have to get some decent needles to knit my amazing new yarns with!
Here’s the pictures from today’s bday party of the kids.
I can’t believe Jacob is 4 & Bailey is 2-time gets away from me so fast.
Bailey got another barbie cake & Jacob wanted a race car cake so I took a 9x13 and cut it in half, stacked it and carved the car out of it-not exactly what I wanted, but it worked pretty good-he loved it and wasn’t happy when we cut into it to eat it. Silly boy,
& a pic of Caitlin with my Grandma-her Great grandma-shell be ?? in Oct. Ok so I know how old she is but dont think she looks it…anyone wanna guess?

& Lieke’s Mom!!!
Lieke I like the Sara doll.
Gina I’m so glad you can knit! This doesnt mean that we can’t finish your shawl?right.
Tami, did you see that RACE CAR CAKE ! Stand back, girl, you’ve got some competition, now ! :teehee:
I love those striped socks ! Happy colors ! Congrats on finishing yours, too, Sue…my husband would love those ! Very conservative, not boring.

Chicken and dumplings here, too ! Lately, when I make them, I freeze half of the chicken (there’s just too much chicken there, even for a big lot of dumplings), so when I want them again, all I have to do is make broth from boullion and make more dumplings ! Yummy ! Mike used to tolerate them…now he asks for them atleast once a week…which means many meals ready from the fridge…a knitter/quilter’s dream !
My stitch holder is the safety pin type like the red one in the picture on the right in the link. I simply open it, slide the yarn in and clip it around my bra strap. (If you don’t have neck problems, you could just put the yarn around your neck.)
GJ when I was looking at the video I thought of pinning to my bra, but when I tried it I punctured one side of my wonder bra and I have been out of balance all day.
But, I did saw an alligator clip that is used for ID badges at work. It has a little plastic loop that goes through the badge. I was thinking of taking a small “D” clip, put it through the plastic loop, and the yarn through the “D” clip. No holes, easy on, Easy off but not as pretty as the clip in the video.
Now when are you doing a detailed video for those of us that are learning impaired?
