My first ever project was years ago. I tried to teach myself and I made a plain blue “scarf”. However, I had no idea about the different types of “stitch patterns” one could make. I’d knit a few rows, then purl a few rows, then knit a row… LOL After it started curling up and I had no idea why, I bound it off and gave it is now used as a scarf for a baby doll. :rofling: I’ll have to get a photo of it tomorrow to show everyone. Hehe
I knitted a pair of mittens in 1985. I was very proud of them, and at the same time couldn’t wear them… I guess I didn’t know anything about controlling tension, since they looked liked they were made in 2 distinctly different sizes! I could’ve worn either size comfortably, but not both at the same time in public! They were knitted from a pale green acrylic yarn (probably from KMart), and I don’t know what ever became of them. I don’t remember tossing them, and I know I didn’t frog them… I may actually find them stashed away in one of my boxes of stuff some day. If I do, there will definitely be a picture posted here.

I’ve officially begun my first project. I’m about 1/4 of the way through a washcloth. My kids have asked me to make them scarves for this winter already (been knitting like two weeks!)
I started a blob in some kind of green acrylic first, to learn t cast on and do the knit stitch. I abandoned it for “covered bridge red” Homespun and make a garter stitch scarf, which I still love (I’ve got a soft spot for it! and it’s cute as an accessory since it’s narrow, which was its intended purpose). I’ve since gone against Homespun.
I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t taking pictures of my knitting when I first began to knit (2 years ago) so I have no photo. Like many others, my 1st project was the ever popular garter st. scarf!
My first project (last year) was a grater stitch scarf for my dd … I used a worsted weight cotton. Followed closly by a hat to match the scarf. :cheering:
My first project was a scarf in garterstitch. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of it and I don’t have it anymore, so I can’t make one. It was made of cotton and nice and warm and really long.
My first project was a hat, knit flat, from a kiddies teach you how to knit book.
After that came a pair of mittens for my youngest, (pattern from the Lion Brand site - done in homespun) then socks and three cabled bags.
I also squeezed in a few toddler-sized sweaters too, in-between those, though I am the world’s worst finisher - a major procrastinator!!
I’ve never knitted a scarf though I did crochet a pretty skinny one which I
.
My first project was a ribbed scarf that I made last year with some practice yarn I bought to teach myself to knit…

What a fun thread.
I learned to knit about 1-1/2 years ago when I picked up Melanie Falick’s Kids Knitting to teach my kids to knit. It’s probably no surprise to anyone that I’m the one who got hooked, and the kids lost interest.
As embarrasssing as they are, here are my first two projects:

My first project that I finished was a pair of preemie booties. I started on a baby blanket. It is all done with knit stitch because I didn’t know how to do the purl stitch.
Oh, I LOVE that bear. I think that is an increadably (forgive the spelling) brave first project.
Oh I had knit lots of squares to play first, and let me add that it’s not as complicated as it might seem. All garter stitch – two sides – sew 'em together. Piece of cake. ![]()
Sewing!!!
(I can just barely sew buttons back on when they fall off things. That’s the sum total of my sewing ability.)
My first project was a bag for my knitting!
My first project was supposed to be a knit chenelle (sp) scarf from the Teach Yourself to Knit book that I had. I got about 30 rows into it and got bored, so I bought yarn to make ds a basketweave afghan from the same booklet. When I was about 1/2-way through with that I got bored again (notice a trend :roflhard: ) so I started a lace afghan for our newborn neice. When it was completed I finished ds’s afghan and then ripped out the scarf.
This was my first project, knit in Microspun. Nevernevernevernever again:
:woot:
My first project in the 11th grade was a pair of slippers, followed by a cable cardigan the color of lime sherbert. when I went off to college ai took it with me-still unfinished and eventually threw it away-still unfinished. NO more knitting until my daughter became pregnant. I then took a class based on Elizabeth Zimmerman’s cardigan pattern, didn’t like the result, and ripped it all out to make an afghan, which I dearly love. From then on I was hooked. But what an addiction! Much better than what I see in court! :happydance:
This is a fun thread. My first finished project was a garter stitch. I was so proud of it, you’d have thought I was a knitting genious. :roflhard:
