I’m super curious as to what everyone’s favourite yarns are. Are there any that you’d make everything out of if you could? Doesn’t even need to be a fancy one, just that yarn that “gets you”
Your favourite yarns
My favorite yarns are from Knit Picks. The Stroll sock yarn can be used for sweaters, gloves, mittens and socks. The gloss comes in Lace and fingering. It is 70 % merino wool 30% silk. It works up beautifully. Siesh is the worsted weight, and it is so nice to use for hats, and sweaters. I even knitted a shawl in the Swish DK weight, and it turned out so lovely.
For small animals with furry textures, I’d use King Cole Truffle. It has some nice natural colours already but I did email the company to suggest a fox-red type colour because I’d definitely use that. Just more colours in general for that yarn would be great!
King Cole Country style 4ply.
Appletons crewel lace if I’m doing something small scale - loads of colours and nice quality for not much money (at least for what I make with it).
Cascade 220.
My favorite yarn is the one that works for what I’m knitting. I tend to be a reverse yarn snob and use ‘bargain’ brands. The people I knit for need things that go in the washer and dryer. The more expensive yarns I’ve used tend to have more knots and other problems. Weird, ain’t it?
I don’t have a favorite yarn, I tend to use what I can afford and what doesn’t make me itch. So I tend to shop sales and buy brands I have used before with good results.
I am currently working on a blanket with Hue+Me from Lion Brand. It’s a chunky(#5) wool blend. I like this yarn and would use it again.
In the last year I have finished a sweater and a shawl using Cascade 220 super wash. I really like this one because it is not itchy and comes in many colors. .
For socks, I like Opal and Regia wool/nylon blends. Opal also sometimes has a version with cotton that is very nice. I also like CoBaSi. It feels good and wears well.
For warm things, I like non-superwash, non-merino wool that’s on the hard-wearing side. Woolen-spun and worsted-spun both have their charms for me. Briggs & Little is one favourite. I’ve also recently tried Peer Gynt, a slightly heavy DK, which I really like.
I also quite like Catania Cotton (mercerised sport weight) although I haven’t worn a garment made with it enough to comment on durability.
I live in Australia and the shipping from many countries is prohibitively expensive, so there are many linen and other plant fibre yarns that I yearn to try but can’t afford.
If I had a TARDIS and a magic bank note printer, I’d go back about 25 years and buy up a lot of classic Rowan yarns at Liberty of London. I’d also like to try the sadly discontinued Pisgah Peaches & Creme.
