I am confused about YO and YOB my ( knitting) pattern calls for both and I’ve googled how to and became more confused because found many Yarn overs but nothing specifically stating YOB.
Would someone assist me with this please ?
Thank you in advance
Lise
Your knitting pattern should have a section in which it defines the abbreviations, usually at the start or end. If the pattern is in a book, all the abbreviations for all the patterns may be given in one place.
What does it say YOB means?
(I suspect it’s a reverse yarnover, but best to defer to the pattern.)
What pattern are you using and who is the designer? The term should be defined but should doesn’t mean is.

Yob is defined. I can’t read the entire line, it’s not there on my screen, but it does seem to be a reverse/backward yo which means it’s wrapped clockwise rather than counterclockwise.
Thank you, both very much. Grumpy Gramma, thank you for the video you included as well.
Best,
Lise
Is your problem solved? If not, let us know. Solutions to a problem you don’t have won’t help.
I was able (thanks to you) to understand yo and reverse yo.
I have cast on 5 stitches as required by the pattern .
Set up row done.
Row 1

I don’t understand how you can yo and sl 1 stitch purlwise…
Wouldn’t the YO have this slide in front purlwise done?
I am on this last stitch and will only have a count of 8 not 9.
I apologize for being unclear with how am asking this question and explaining my difficulty. Thank you so much for the help you have patiently and kindly given. I have knitted since I was 10 yo, now 70, one would think I could figure it out. I guess a more accomplished knitter would .
I’m grateful that you have tried to assist me .
We’re here to help you figure it out. If it’s new to you then there’s always someone who has done it before and will be happy to help out.
Near the end of row 1, work the yarn over as usual. Bring the yarn to the front between the needles then over the right hand needle to the back. In order to bring the yarn to the front, continue around the needle, bringing the yarn strand to the front again. Slip the last stitch. The pattern is asking you to slip purlwise so put the needles tip to tip and slide that last stitch off the left onto the right needle.
You should end with 9sts or loops over the needle. That last slip stitch may try to hide under the yarn over but don’t let it do that!
This video shows the yarn around the needle. You won’t be purling that last stitch as in the video but the yarn over and back around is the same.

I’m glad salmonmac explained this for you. I’d never be able to. You’re little older than me and have been knitting longer than I have. That doesn’t mean you should know everything. Something different is something different and I’m glad there is help available when we need it. salmonmac and others here helped me learn how to use my sticks to turn yarn into a sweater for my grandson about 12 years ago. The knitters here are an amazing resource. I’m very glad you’re here.
I promised myself I’ll only keep knitting until I’ve learned all I can about knitting. I see no end in sight.
Dear Salmonmac,
It’s with great thanks and sincerity I write to say your explanation was able to “click” with me. Thank you for the clear explanation and step by step instructions. I can’t tell what a relief it was to successfully do this. I even printed out your explanation and pinned it to my instructions.
This isn’t the first time you’ve helped me either. Each time you have I’ve been successful.
Wishing you the best and I’m grateful for your expertise.
Lise
Thank you for your kind assistance. I appreciate your support. I agree with you Salmonmac , is a wonderful teacher and has helped me many times.
I want to thank you as well for your assistance and this follow-up note which was so lovely of you.
Best wishes,
Lise
You are too kind. We are all delighted to help and so pleased when it all works out. Your persistence has made this work. Enjoy finishing this very pretty shawl!
Hello, I’m new on here but grateful to have come across this forum due to sheer desperation on the same pattern by Karina Fenandes. once you have done K1, yob, k to marker, yo, SM, k1, yob, k to last st, yo, sl1 purlwise wyif. I think i’ve got this BUT coming back on the next row which is K1, K1tbl, k to marker, SM, K1tbl, k to last st, sl1 pwise wyif. I noticed that the yo stitch is funny to knit. I’m slightly confused by this pattern. I’ve also noticed that there’s always more on one side. I hope i’m making sense, if you’re familiar with the pattern. Thank you.
Welcome to the forum!
The pattern has reverse yarn overs (the yob) which may seem a bit unusual to knit. Knitting the conventional yarn over through the back loop on the next row will twist the stitch and close up the yarn over.
Knitting the yob as usual on the next row will also close up the backwards yarn over which is already twisted. It is a little strange to work the needle into that yob to knit it but that’s what the pattern is asking for.
Hi all! Very grateful to have come across this thread. I’ve just started knitting this myself but having trouble. Is the marker supposed to be in the middle at all times? i’m only about 8 rows in but it’s not in the middle
Welcome to KH!
Is it the Tiny Tassels shawl? From the directions posted it seems to be near the middle stitch but not on that stitch. Is that where you’re having a question? Perhaps you could quote row 8 or so. Don’t give us a large portion of a pattern due to designer copyright. You can also post a photo if that might help.
Thank you so much for getting back to me! Yea it is the Tiny Tasssel Shawl. I’ve gotten into a heap and unravelled it now to start again lol!. I think i’m getting confused with the k1, yo, SM, k1sequence. I was getting a hole in the middle of my work
The yo is going to create a hole or eyelet. It’s a way of increasing and creating a lighter or lacier pattern.
You can use a lifeline to keep your knitting and be able to frog back to it in case of trouble.
Sometimes you don’t have to rip back all the way but just back to the last lifeline.
