This may sound odd to you girls out there, but this past summer was the first time I had ever painted my toenails a beautiful red. No, I did not use a clear base coat as I didn’t know I needed too. So back at the end of August/early September I noticed that both of my big toes, towards the tips, were a yellowish color. None of the other toes were yellow. I thought little of it and cut them back and they continue to grow out with a yellow just where the white part of the nail stops and the pink part starts.
They don’t hurt or aren’t cracking or chipping or aren’t thick in any way at all. I was just researching online (always a mistake on my part) and all I found was fungus, up to a year on meds to make it go away, very expensive…then I stumbled upon the base coat theory and I didn’t do that. Could that be the reason they are still yellow? Or could it be the start of the fungus theory?
It’s not a gross yellow or green or anything yucky, they just look funny and they keep growing back the same. Should I go to my doctor or try one of these home remedies they suggest?
I would see your doctor and just make sure it’s not anything really serious (although I don’t know what it would be). If it is a fungus, then you could see if there are other, less expensive treatment options. From what I’ve heard, nail polish can make fungus worse, because it prevents air from getting to your toenails. But don’t quote me on that…
Yeah, it’s from the dye in the nail polish, I didn’t know that’s what the base color is for. It takes a looooonng time for toenails to grow, so that’s probably why it’s still there.
If you suspect a fungus, I have a simple, inexpensive, proven cure. Vicks Vaporub. Doesn’t even have to be Vicks. Any store brand will do.
I had a fungus infection under my big toes for a couple of years and covered them with polish. Then I read about the Vicks and decided to try it. Every morning, before I put on my socks, I painted some Vicks on my toenail and at the cuticle.
The nails immediately started growing in healthy. It took several months for the entire nail to come in (the Vicks didn’t fix the bad nail) but by the summer, I could bare my toes again.
I spent less than $2 and never had to see a doctor or worry about side effects.
I think it’s the acid in the vics that makes it work. Lemon juice is supposed to work, too, but the Vics stays on better.
I keep my toes polished year round in some kind of red poish. They are yellow from 1. the dyes in the polish and 2. not getting sun. This is what my nail tech told me & so every so often she will have me just put clear on them, usually in the winter when no one sees my toes for 4 months or I will go to getting a french manicure on them until the nails grow out with a healthy white nail.
Also the thicker your nail is the more yellow there is in them. I have that issue with my finger nails that see no polish other than clear. I have to wear a specific polish that helps to brighten & whiten them up.
It is up to you & if you think you might need a trip to the dr’s to determine a fungus or just a dis-coloration from the polish. Hopes this helps you a little.
If u can find it
try some gentian violet
paint ur nails twice a day or so
and wear BLACK socks
but it does wonders for nail fungus
and black/purple nails are all the rage
at least my hiking teenagers with damp boots say so
I received an email a while ago about using Listerine mouthwash for toenail fungus. You just soak your toes in it daily. I haven’t tried it, but since I could not find Vaporub at Walmart earlier today i may tried Listerine.
This may be TMI, but I’ve had a nail fungus that has actually lifted the nail. After reading here about using Vicks, I cut the nail down and started using the Vaporub twice a day. It works! The pain is gone from the whole nail.
