Well my first FO was a plain garter stitch scarf in camo for my OMG 4 year old son at the time, hes 7 now. It looked like it had been through a war! The varigated colors hid a lot of mistakes. LOL But I washed it and it looked a little better. 
I kept that ragged thing to show all the new people I teach. And Im really glad I left all the “mistakes” in that simple scarf, cause it reminds me how to treat our children (or anyone) learning a new skill.
I think your hat looks great for a first project! And its gona take you no time to surpass your current skills, I promise. Thats what amazes me about knitting. Just a little practice yields great returns.
