Hi. I’ve downloaded a free pattern (90060AD) for Lion Brand Babysoft Lullaby Layette. It says 4 balls of Lion Brand Babysoft Yarn but no weight is given and I want to buy and equivalent that’s cheaper. Can anyone help me to work out how many grams I would need and how to find an equivalent?
Many thanks in advance.
Marion
That’s an adorable set. The Lion Brand yarn is also discontinued so there’s that too. The yarn was a classic DK, about 22sts/4" or 10cm. DK yarns in this range should work.
The pattern lists 24sts/4" for the jacket, hat and booties, and 22sts/4" for the blanket using different size needles.
Ordinarily yarnsub.com is very helpful at finding similar yarns but it doesn’t seem to recognize the LB Baby Soft.
Thank you so much, that’s really helpful. It’s a lovely set isn’t it. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
That is an adorable set! Before I realized all baby yarn wasn’t the same thickness, LOL, I used them all interchangeably. That would be fine for the blanket. The great thing about baby wear is that it will fit some time! I made what I thought was a NB sweater for my first granddaughter and it was huge. I’m not sure anyone ever wore that one (she has three sisters now)!
I really like Hobby Lobby’s Baby Bee Sweet Delights. It’s wonderful to work with (so soft!) and the work turns out nicely.
There is a gauge given on Ravelry:
“ 22 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches
in Eyelet pattern with size 6 (4 mm) needles (blanket)”
and in the pattern:
“Sweater, Hat, Booties: 24 sts + 32 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and Pattern st on Size 4 (3.5 mm) needles”.
I’d see how close I could come to that or change needle size. Personally, my gauge is never spot on for both rows and stitches.
Hi. Sorry to go back to this pattern again but I haven’t had time to start it yet. I’m confused about how many balls of another yarn to get. It says 4 balls but I don’t know how many grams that would be. Can you help me please?
You want to look for the yardage given for the LB Baby Soft. Ravelry lists it at 459 yards/slein. Four balls would be 4x459yards or about 1840yards of the the new yarn which should also knit at about 22sts/4inches in stockinette or in the eyelet pattern.

It’s not a problem asking about this pattern or any other. We’re happy to have you come back and ask anytime.
Thank you so much. That’s so helpful. It seemed like a silly question but I just couldn’t see how to solve it! X
Not silly in the least but a very good question. Let us know how the pattern is going!
I got James C Brett Baby Marble dk yarn eventually and am knitting Sirdar 1815 v neck cardigan. I can’t find where to post a question about the pattern though! Should I post it here?
Many thanks,
Marion
Sure, you can post it here. If you would rather start a new topic, go to the menu (3 lines) at the top of this page on the right and click Latest. At the top of the page that opens is a +New Topic button. Click on that and you can post in any category.
Cute pattern! We’ve had questions about this one before on the forum.
Thank you - just about to post a new question x
