I wasn’t able to get the yarn recommended but went with the same weight and now I’m questioning all my life choices. I’m prepared to use Lion Brand Truboo and after a few rows am wondering if it’s going to work. My swatch looks wonderful (just a garter stitch) and I felt like the finished project would have beautiful ‘drape’, but my edges are sloppy (added one knit stitch before the 3 slipped stitches at beginning/end of each row to maybe help tighten that up). Is this going to work? Should I just frog it and find another type of yarn?
That yarn should work and give you nice drape. If you’re adding the extra sts at the very end of the rows you may be interfering with the nice rounded edge pattern. I wouldn’t recommend those extra sts. The swatch in the pattern stitch doesn’t have the edge pattern.
Make sure it’s a good sized swatch in order to judge. However, if you don’t like the look of the swatch then you probably won’t like the blanket with this yarn.
I agree that adding a stitch won’t work well. From my reading of the pattern I think the slipped stitches are at the beginning of each row, not beginning and end. That could make a difference in how your edges work up.
Row 1 (right side): Slip 3, p1, *k2, p1, k3, repeat from * to last 4 stitches, p1, k3.
I gather you did the swatch as written, but are now having trouble with the actual blanket? I’m with @GrumpyGramma. The 3 slipped stitches, when knit on the other side, should result in an I-cord edge.
I loved the swatch but wasn’t happy with the way the project was looking at the edges…until it was pointed out that I was mistakenly repeating the slipped stitches
I am happy to get the validation that the yarn will work though, and will now start over without the added slips
You’re not the first and won’t be the last to read a pattern wrong. I have no idea how many times I’ve done something similar. I’m glad you’ll now be able to see how it works out with your yarn.
It is possible to slip stitches on both ends every other row. For me the problem with that is remembering to make sure I do it at the end and the rows don’t all start and end the same, something I like a lot.
