A friend lent me the book “Knits for Barbie Doll” by Nicky Epstein. I am a pretty new knitter, but want to do the Knitting Olympics and thought some Barbie clothes would be a manageable project for this. And I know my 5 year old will love them for her birthday coming up.
Several of the patterns in this book call for Paternayan Persian by JCA. What could I use instead? I can’t find it on yarndex.com. Doing an internet search, it looks like it is actually a wool cross stitching yarn, usually sold in strands??
One pattern calls for 7 sts and 9 rows to 1: over st st using size 2 needles and 2 plys of yarn. Another calls for 6 sts and 9 rows to 1" over st st using size 3 and 2 plys of yarn.
Another really cute one calls for knit cro-sheen by J&P Coats, 7 sts and 8 ros to 1" over st st on size 3 with 2 strands of yarn held together.
I know these are just doll clothes, but I do want them to sort of fit.

Persian yarn is a needlepoint yarn, usually three ply. Each ply is very thin, probably comparable to or slightly thinner than fingering yarn. The knit-cro-sheen is cotton crochet thread, thinner than fingering yarn.
I would try a skein of fingering or sock yarn and experiment with one and two strands, with different needle sizes, to come up with the suggested gauges.
I would think that fingering weight yarn would work well. Knit-cro-sheen is just about the same thickness as lace weight yarn.
