Me again. I have a pattern called Sam, which is a bottom up child’s sweater by Amy Christoffers. It requires Berroco Vintage Chunky. The actual yarn label gives tension of 14 st x 21xrows on 6mm needles. However the pattern says 14 St x 21 rows on 5.50mm needles. The problem I have is the size I’m knitting requires 96 stitches. Looking at that there is no way that would fit a child with 25inch chest. It’s tiny. Surely 0.50mm wouldn’t make a huge difference.
Yarn tension different to the pattern
For 96sts at 14sts/4" that’s 27.5"around which would fit a 25"chest. If you’d like a bit more room in the sweater (more positive ease) then you could go up to the next size which gives you 30" with a cast on of 103sts.
The really important thing is to knit a good sized swatch of about 20sts and measure how many sts you get with your needles. You may have to adjust up or down a needle size to come close to 14sts/4" measured over the middle 4" of the swatch.
Thank you, I knew you’d trace the pattern. My tension showed I need to drop a needle size so went from 5mm to 4.5. But the resultant cast on was teeny. Couldn’t knit a round on 24inch circulars. I need to regroup. Knitting a swatch on circular has its own challenges.
There’s a trick for doing this that will help out.
That’s soo clever. Will have a yo tomorrow. Thank you once again
I ended up doing the swatch as per the video. Dropped half a needle size. The issue turned out to be the cast on round. It looked so small. Once I had done 2 rounds it looked and was big enough. Sorry to be high maintenance.
Not at all. Yours was a good question, something that we all face at one time or another. Thanks for bringing up the ever problematic question of gauge.
You’re not high maintenance. My only comment is to be sure your cast on isn’t too tight. Finding out it’s tight after knitting most or all of the garment is no fun.
I find the cast on row very important in how happy I end up with something. Casting on with a larger needle or trying out one of the many stretchy cast on methods is well worth the practise time.
I now love Jeny’s stretchy slip knot cast on. It’s slow, quite tricky to get to grips with, and I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it a lot and have resigned myself to spending a long time casting on.
The cast on worked out OK. The St St area is lovely but, the top is mistake rib which looks horrible so top heavy. It might be my knitting though. I’m tempted to either carry on with St St or maybe moss stitch. Any suggestions would be welcome.
It looks terrific to me. I love the mistake rib which is such a nice, comfortable cushy stitch pattern. Your knitting looks lovely and even.
OK, I’ll stick with it lol. It looks lumpy to me might look better with more of it. Thank you lovely.
I also think your kniting looks lovely.
Perhaps you will like it more after it has relaxed with a wash and as it gets worn and washed.
Very nice.
Sometimes, things can look worse to you until they’re finished and put together. I think your knitting looks neat, but we are all unsatisfied with our own work at times.
