Yarn substutution

Hi-

I want to knit a cashmere sweater for my daughter using instructions for a sweater that she loves. We found some lovely cashmere that was listed under “worsted and Aran weights,” (guage=4-5 st./in. on size 5-8 needles) I thought this would be perfect, so I ordered a skein to test out. To my disappointment, the yarn is defiitely not worsted or Aran weight - more like sport or even fingering. I can get the guage on number 8 needles, but the knit looks flimsy to me.

So here’s my thought, because I really do love the yarn and the sweater pattern. Is it possible to use the cashmere, and follow the “large” instructions (including the recommended yardage) to make a “medium” sweater? I would knit with number 7 needles, getting about 5 stitches to the inch.

Thanks for your help-

Yes you could certainly do that. What gauge does the pattern state, it may be different than the yarn, but if it’s close that should work. Make sure your sts/in on the 7s times the chest measurement equals a stitch number that is close to the stitches for the large size.

Sue-

Thanks so much for your reply. Here’s more accurate information (I went home and carefully measured the test swatch) : the instructions call for a gauge of 5 1/2 st/in in a stockinette, using Fjord yarn on size 6 needles ; I get a gauge of 6 st/in using the cashmere on size 7 needles.

Do you still think it will work?

Thanks again!

Susan

Sure, that should be okay with making the next size larger. You’re getting more stitches per inch, so you need more stitches to get the size you need.
