Yarn Substitution

I just ran across a neat pattern on Berroco.com that uses this yarn, which has been discontinued.

Can someone suggest a good alternative for it?

I’d say you can use any yarn you like that knits up at the same gauge. That yarn looks like it normally knits up at 5 sts/inch. So, look for yarns that knit at that guage. It can be wool, or whatever you want to use. If you want wool, and if it price is more priority than luxury softness, you could use KnitPick’s Wool of the Andes.

Does that make it pretty much a worsted weight yarn, then? I was thinking maybe Lion Brand’s Mohair Look might work, although I’m sure it’s not nearly as soft.

I went to Lion Brand looking for Mohair Look’s info, but I don’t see this yarn - I only see Moonlight Mohair. The Sensuwool you want to substitute for looks rather smooth, but the mohair yarns I’m familiar with are pretty hairy. I would think you’d want to find another smooth-ish yarn. What are the other two yarns you’re thinking of using for the Mohair Classic and Chinchilla - or are you going to use those? I do like the look of this coat.

Have you tried yarn search features? Quite a few online retailers have a yarn substitution feature. You can search for alternate yarns based on weight, the composition etc. - have you tried this? Or are you looking to buy at a lys? Take the gauge info and maybe the look and composition of the yarn to a lys and maybe someone can help.

Sorry I don’t know of any specific yarn offhand.

Carol – You’re right, the Mohair stuff is a little hairier than the SensuWool. Oh, and you can find the Mohair Look on Lion Brand’s web site under the Jiffy yarns, I believe. Anyway, I’ve decided to put this project on hold while I finish up a rug I’m working on. I hadn’t really even gotten far enough to think about the other two yarns yet!

I’ve tried this feature on Knitpicks.com. Haven’t run across it on any other sites yet. That leads me to this question: Do any of you have favorite yarn sites? (hmmm … perhaps I should start a new thread w/ that question.)
