yarn over in the round

I am knitting a jumper in the round. The raglan increase is made with a yarn over, which normally leaves a little hole. The pattern says "On next round work yarn over twisted to avoid holes. How do you do this?

Check up any video about M1L and M1R. The bar that is picked up in those videos is exactly the same yarn as the YO. Then knit it so it is becoming twisted in the same way as in those videos.

Thanks. So that means the yarn over and the twist happens in the same row?

If you would want to use M1L and M1R rather than YO, you do M1L or M1R one row later. YO is used for making a looser M1L or M1R by creating a longer bar.

Assuming you’re a standard “western style” knitter, you’d normally just knit the yarn overs you made “through the back loop” on the following round–you’ll see how this twists the little loop they created if you do a couple. to leave the yarn overs as open holes, you’d knit them “through the front loop” so to speak.

Hope that makes sense… (directions could be a little different if you knit eastern or combined, but the principles are the same.)

That’s brilliant - thanks. I’m teaching myself to knit with yarn in left hand instead of ‘throwing’ yarn held in right - and am following Norwegian pattern - so I think that’s why it all feels a bit confusing!

Your explanation makes complete sense.

Great! (on a side note, coincidentally I believe Engblom and I both knit with the yarn in the left hand too so, hey, you’re already in good company…)

Good luck with the rest of your work.
