I’ve been knitting for years and this is the first time I encountered this step to yarn over at the beginning of row in Stockinette. Can anyone please help me?

Pull the yarn forward as if to purl and knit the first stitch. I will leave the YO.
I got stumped on the myself, too! I was knitting a scarf, as I recollect.
I never figured it out…but what I did was…I added an extra stitch at the beginning and end of each row…and made them into ‘edge stitches’…which are knit stitches on the RS and the WS.
That forced the yarn over to be one stitch in from the leading edge.
