Hello everybody,…I want to know the difference between yarn forward and yarn over needle. Have watched the video showing yarn over, but my pattern has both, is there another video somewhere that can show me,…new to knitting and need help. Thankyou.
When you move the yarn forward from a knit stitch, then make a knit stitch right after that, you’ve created a YO. You can also move the yarn to the front, then over the needle to the back and that’s a YO too. So there’s really no difference. Odd that the pattern uses both, or is it YF and YON? YON is used when going from a purl to a knit stitch, while YF is between two knit sts.
I’ve seen both terms used for the same thing, but I’ve also seen them used differently. To me, YO (Yarn Over)has always meant bringing the yarn completely over the needle, from back to front and to the back again, creating a new stitch.
YF (Yarn Forward), on the other hand, has always meant simply moving your yarn from the back to the front, just like you do when you go from a knit stitch to a purl stitch. As Suzeeq, if you do a YF and then knit a stitch, you end up with a YO, so it can be confusing. I guess it all depends on how the patterns uses it!
