this may be answered somewhere, but searching for dishcloth brought back a zillion results, sorry!
are there any other yarn suggestions for dishcloths besides the sugar 'n cream/peaches 'n cream cottons? I would really like to make some for gifts, but I really don’t like working with those yarns. I mean they’re not terrible or anything, I think it’s just that I prefer and am more accustomed to wools. I was wondering if maybe the mercerized cottons would work? Someone suggested they might not be as absorbent though… any thoughts?
I’m not sure about mercerized cottons; I haven’t tried them. I did make one with Microspun and it’s not the most absorbant, I won’t use it again. Plus I really hated knitting with it (very splitty).
I haven’t tried any of them myself, but lionbrand and another brand commonly found at Joann’s/Michaels/AC Moore have organic cottons now. They should work well, and may have a different feel then the sugar 'n cream/peaches 'n cream cottons. The organics do cost a bit more, though.
elann has that pakucho organic now for $2.98 a ball… maybe i will give that a go. i think it might just be cotton in general that i dislike, but worth trying again since i’m planting some.
Some people like knitting dishcloths with Bernat Cottontots.
You can use wool if you want, but it will felt (unless you use superwash).
I’ve also heard of people knitting dishcloths with scratchy acrylic yarn, to make a good scrubcloth.
I agree with WandaT about Saucy. My very first project at my LYS was a dishcloth using Reynolds Saucy - very soft 100% Mercerized Cotton. Easy to work with because it’s smooth & doesn’t split easily.
