How do you know if you’re on the wrong side or the right side?

It depends on what you’re knitting. For regular stockinette st, the right side is the smooth side with the knit v’s showing with the purl bumps being the wrong side.

If it’s a pattern that is ambiguous–like ribbing, you can check the pattern and see if the right side started with a k2 or a p2.

Otherwise, you can see where your tail is–it depends on what method of cast on you used.

I casted on “normally”…lol :thinking: I did the one where you put your hand like a gun. I need to “end with a WS row.” I’m doing a simple k1, pl rib (start the row with a p, end the row with a p).

I assume you mean long-tail cast on–good visual, though!

When you use that cast on the tail is at your point when you’ve finished an even row, and ws rows are usually the even ones. Hope that helps.

I don’t know how to count rows- - - plus, it said just do the stitch for 13.5 inches. :-\

You don’t have to count. Knit for 13.5 inches, and make the last row you knit one where the tail of the cast on is at the same end as the point of your needle when you’re done with it.

That’s ok.

When you use a long tail cast on–hand like a gun–you have a tail hanging from your knitting at the point end of your needle, that stays on the first row in the corner, right?

After knitting your 13.5 inches, look back at the beginning row. If the tail is at the same end as your point, then you’ve finished with a WS row as your directions said. If it’s at the other end, then knit one more row.

What I think Ingrid meant to say is if the tail is on the same side as your point - you are done - if it isn’t - do one more row of your pattern. She was just using the term “knit” as a general term for what you are doing - knitting.

Does that make sense?

It doesn’t matter what the stitch pattern is. The tail will end up in the same place.

You said earlier that it is a rib, so you’re doing k,p,k,p across the row.

And to be honest, with a rib it really doesn’t matter which is RS or WS since they look the same. If you can’t tell whether or not you’ve ended on a WS row, it really shouldn’t make a difference.

That is true Ingrid - I didn’t even think of that.

As a newbie myself - I would get caught up too in some of the directions - so I can understand the problem. Are you ok with the answers?

Thank you!!! Thank goodness I was doing the pattern correctly…I would’ve just about died/cried. Anyways, since it doesn’t matter, I’m going to switch colors then. :slight_smile: Thanks again Ingrid!
