Wrong-side cables?

Hello! I’m swatching for a test knit for a cabled pullover. The charted cables are all on even-numbered rows. I’m assuming this means they’re knit on the wrong side? If this is true, do I hold the CN in back instead of the front and vice versa - opposite of the chart? Seems confusing! This part of the sweater is knit flat. Maybe it’s worth noting too, that all of the row numbers are listed on both the left and right side of the chart. I’ve never seen this. Aren’t the odd usually on the right and even on left?

The designer should be available for questions, suggestions, or for you to point out errors or omissions. Some charts have the even numbered rows as RS rows. Are you sure the cable crosses happen on the WS? I’m also doing a test knit with cables and one of the charts has RS rows with even numbers. If some rows are numbered on the right and some on the left of chart, the numbers on the right of the chart should be for the RS rows. There should be some indication of RS and WS rows and if you can’t find it ask the designer. I’m lucky. Janet Lee who designed my pattern is very responsive to questions and is ready and willing to help as needed. I hope your designer is good at quick responses too,

Hello
I agree with GrumpyGramma that the designer needs to know if this is confusing and be available to answer questions.
I would not assume even numbered rows are the WS side though. Depending what cast on you use the RS may be odd or even numbered.
For example a long tail cast on produces stitches on the right needle and when you turn you are on the wrong side starting a row 1, row 2 would be the right side, however with a knit cast on stitches are produced on the left needle and you do not turn the work but rather work the stitches straight off with row 1 being the right side and row 2 being the wrong side.

I’m not very experienced but I’d imagine the cables would be worked from the right side as that seems to be more the standard - unless it is a very unusual looking project.

Thank you for your response! The designer has been very helpful so far and very present to answer questions. Unfortunately, she lives in Norway and the time difference works against me sometimes. She also let us know ahead of time that she would be unavailable due to a family event - of course that’s when I have a question!

My initial question about ws/rs came up when I was trying to practice a cable section as I was swatching. I’m just getting back to the project tonight, but I think I just need to cast on with the needles I seatched with and handle the chart when I get closer. I must admit, this project seems beyond my comprehension right now, but I do love a challenge! Thanks again!

Thank you for your response - it makes a lot of sense to me! It is, in fact, a long-tail cast-on, so I will be keeping your advice in mind will help as I get closer to that charted section. Thanks again!
