Working with Alpaca yarn

I’m knitting a child’s sweater with 50/50 alpaca and merino wool yarn. I knew the alpaca would shed some but hoped it would be minimal since it’s blended with the merino wool. Plus my hands tend to perspire while knitting and the yarn gets a bit damp as well! Would anyone know if there is a way to eliminate or reduce the shedding? Thank you for advice on this.

Are you finding that the yarn is shedding as you knit? I’ve knit with alpaca and alpaca blends and not noticed this problem. Maybe wash the sweater when you’re finished and hope that that gets rid of most of the short fibers that are loosely spun.

Thank you! I will take your advice and wash the sweater when finished. It also sounds like this shedding could be unique to the yarn that I purchased.

I made a hat out of Misti Alpaca chunky and it did shed some, also got little bits of alpaca up my nose! But the finished hat no longer seems to shed, probably because it isn’t getting dragged over my lap/legs as it was when I was knitting it.

Be really careful when washing. Alpaca yarn felts easily when washed. The trick is to wash is cool water, rinse at the same temperature, do not wring and dry it flat. ( I have alpacas) the fibres should not be shedding much. Are you knitting on bamboo needles?
