Working through back of all 4 sts together?!

Hi there,

Fairly new to knitting! Attempting my 3rd baby cardi. But I am stumped currently on this:

slip the next 4 sts on to right hand needle dropping the extra loops to leave long sts, place these back on to left hand needle then (k1 p1 k1 p1) working through back of all 4 sts tog

I understand slipping them off and leaving the loops to make the long sts, and popping them back onto the left hand needle. But when it says k1p1 etc working through back of all 4 of those long sts TOGETHER…how can I k1 p1 k1 p1 all together in back loops?! Or am I reading it completely wrong!

Thanks in advance!

Lauren

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
Yes, you’ll kpkp into all 4sts and do this through the back loop. Here’s a video for kpk into the front of a stitch. You’ll be working something similar but you’ll work into the back of the 4 stitches. (There is an alternative.)

You’ll be doing the same movement of the yarn strand between the needles from the back to knit to the front to purl.

Here’s videos for working knits and purls into the back loop in case that helps.

OK, the alternative is to replace the purl through the back loop with a yarn over. It’s easier to do and less bulky, and it may work with your pattern. You would knit into the back loop of the 4sts together, then bring the yarn to the front between the needles, yarn over the right needle to the back and then repeat the knit, yarn over sequence.
