I am knitting a pair of booties in seed stitch. The directions say “Work in seed st and inc one st at each end of next and every foll alt row until there are 32 sts, work all increase sts in seed st to keep continuity of pattern. Dec one st at each end of next and every foll alt row until 22 sts rem.” When I attempt this, I always end up with a ribbed effect instead of the seed stitch. If you are knitting or purling two together to dec, how do you follow the seed st pattern (ie is the next stitch a knit or a purl?) I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Thanks!
The easiest way to keep track is to look at your knitting. If the next stitch presenting itself is a knit stitch, purl it. If the next one is a purl, knit it. If you make a mistake and knit a knit or purl a purl, just take it out and do it the other way.
For the increases, you can knit into the front and back of the stitches to do the increase, and then work them in pattern on the next row. At the beginning of the row, you can look at the first real stitch in the pattern and count backwards to know where to start.
You have to change how you start the row. Instead of just k1,p1, after you’ve done the increases, knit what look like purl sts and purl what look like knit sts and it’ll come out as seed st instead of ribbing.
