Work plain - what's that?

Hello,

the cap pattern says: “CO 76 sts. PM and join round; work 5 rnds plain”.

I understand cast on 76 stitches, place marker and join round… but what does work plain mean? Garter or stockinette, or something else?:??

The link to pattern (free download in PDF): http://www.knitpicks.com/cfpatterns/pattern_display.cfm?ID=50722220

Thanks for help!

Okay, you’re joining in the round. When you knit this way, you will automatically have stockinette stitch. This means that you will knit five rounds without doing anything else until you get to a change in the pattern.

The instructions want you to knit 5 rounds without increasing or decreasing and without starting the twig lace pattern. These rounds will give you the rolled brim on the hat.
