I started a pattern for a beanie using the given yarn. It is sport weight and called for 89 stitches in st s to cast on. First 8 rows stockinette size US 3 needle. Then switch to size 6 and make linen stitch. I’ve done a couple of rows but it looks really small. Do you think it will stretch a lot or should I start again and cast on more? I swatched with the larger needle for gauge
Hello
I find that knit fabric doesn’t really measure well when it is so close to the needles. If you made a gauge swatch and the gauge was fine then your beanie might be fine if you just work away from the needles more. If it was mine I’d continue and if nothing else use this hat as a large gauge swatch to calculate more accurately how many to cast on for hat 2. It might be better with a stretchier cast on, or a larger needle on the stockinette section, or more stitches.
Beautiful colors and stitch pattern. Did you swatch in linen stitch? It tends be a tight pattern stitch. I agree with Creations about working more rows to make sure of the size.
I just swatched in a stockinette using the larger needle. Perhaps I should start out with the larger needle since that was in gauge and make a swatch for the linen stitch. And start over.
Linen stitch is lovely but worth swatching in that pattern as it can be tight. You can work a couple more rounds to see how it goes if you think it’ll help.
The pattern says the finished circumference is 17", which seems very small unless the fabric is really stretchy. Which linen stitch is not. Most women’s heads are 21-22" (52-56cm). I would definitely try the larger needle, and maybe even add a few stitches.
This is beautiful yarn! Can you tell us what it is?
