Will a crocheted edging keep stockinette from curling?

I’m curious about this. I was looking at a pattern for a crocheted baby bib at the Lily Sugar 'n Cream web site, but I prefer the look of knitted items better than crochet… but a crochet edging looks lovely.

If I knitted a bib entirely in stockinette, and did an edging in crochet, would that keep it from curling?

Has anyone ever tried this?

I am very inexperienced with crochet, but I successfully crocheted an edging around a washcloth recently… it was just single crochet.

i dont know the answer, i just wanted to tell you that your mitered washcloth looks great!

My experience is that a crocheted edging on the sides of Stockinette St won’t keep it from curling.

3 to 5 sts in Seed St or Garter St on either side does help.

And 3 to 5 rows of the same at the bottom edge, just to balance the ‘look’.

Yes, a crocheted edge will keep a stockinette stitch item from curling. Just remember to do it on the top, sides, and bottom

How is it that my avatar is now on Knutty Knitter?

That is weird… I just assumed it was you.

I see a kitty on her avatar. :??

Seems to be conflicting opinion as to whether crochet edging will prevent curling. :roflhard: Maybe different edges work differently?

Knittyknutter was gracious enough to change it.

Crochet on a swatch of stockinette st did flatten it. However, the test was not done on the yarn that I am hoping to flatten when my current project is completed. (Couldn’t find my swatch with that yarn.) Here’s hoping that it DOES flatten it, since I want the stitches to match the armhole finish used in the instructions. Will let everyone know when I complete the project. A sticky might even be created when the results are in.

I am working up to making a Fair Isle piece, and wondering about the edges. I think I will make a swatch, block it, and edge it with crochet. Then see what happens. The piece will be a vest. Here’s hoping.

Generally I would say a crochet edge will not work permanently especially on a large piece of work. Swatching will help you decide though.
