Why, why, why?

This is my first attempt at a sweater. I completed the back and smoothed it out tonight to check it out. OMG. :!!!: I can’t believe it. Disaster. I’ve been knitting for about a year and I thought it was time to move on from squares and things. I guess not. See my blog to understand the error that I made. I’m not sure still the directions and where I went wrong. www.panaroy.blogspot.com

:??

:wall:

Where did I go wrong?? :frog:
There is no frogging this one since it’s striped and I had to cut all the ends to change colors.

I’m sorry that your first visit to the forum is such a sad one. :pout:

“Dec 1 st at each end of the next 5 rows, then on every foll alt row until 10 sts rem”. I assumed it was decrease one every other row.

Your decreases should have been one at each end of the decrease rows, so that the sides of the armholes would come in evenly like this: / \

Otherwise, the colors are lovely.

You could rip it down to where the decreases started and take it from there.

How was I supposed to know which rows were the decrease rows if the pattern says to do it every alternating row? I assumed it was every other row.

:pout:

You were right to do them every other row. Where I think your mistake came was not doing a decrease at the beginning and end of the rows.

You decreases should have been like this:

k2tog, work to last two stitches, k2tog
p2tog, work to last two stitches, p2tog
k2tog, work to last two stitches, k2tog
p2tog, work to last two stitches, p2tog
k2tog, work to last two stitches, k2tog – These are the 5 dec rows.

Then

p across
k2tog, work to last two stitches, k2tog --do these two rows until 10 stitches remain.

sigh I can’t believe that I missed that. I read your post and I now understand where I went wrong. Thank you so much! I can sleep tonight. Now what to do… frog back and hope for the best I suspect.
