Why is my i-cord edging so tight?

I love the look of an i-cord edge, for sleeves and necklines. But when I knit i-cord, it always ends up way too tight, and puckers the fabric of the sleeve or neckline. I’ve tried picking up more stitches, and less stitches, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference. I’ve tried knitting as loosely as posible, and usually I’m not a tight knitter. I know you’re supposed to tug the last stitch in each pattern, but is that contributing to my i-cord being too tight? Any help or tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

You might try knitting the i-cord with a larger needle, one even two sizes larger. Stephen West has this recommendation and even though it’s for side edges, it would help with tight i-cord or puckers at cuffs and necklines. You don’t have to use the re-do on every stitch but every so often, knit the i-cord twice.

It’s such a pretty edge that it’s worth trying to get it perfect.
