Why am I NOT getting a stockinette stitch (but garter instead) when knitting on the round?

I am a fairly new knitter, I took it up during the lockdowns. I am having trouble and problems with the magic loop and knitting in the round. Instead of the stockinette stitch on a baby cardigan`s sleeves, I keep getting the garter stitch, which lovely though it is, is rather annoying. Any advice on what I am doing wrong, or tips on how I can correct this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Hamid

When working in the rounds you should make knit stitches every round. If you alternate between a knit round and a purl round you will get garter.

Many thanks for responding to my dilemma… I really appreciated your response. I realise that expressed myself rather poorly in my question. I am knitting (& getting) the stockinette stitch, only it appears on the INSIDE of my sleeve (of a baby cardigan) and not on the outside as it should. I am only knitting in the round (and not knitting then purling). So very frustrating - for a beginner !

Could you post a photo of your work? I’m interested to see what’s going on here!

You may have inadvertently flipped your knitting inside out. It may be that you have the purl side facing out and the knit side facing in. It’s easy to correct it that’s the problem.
This works with circulars, dpns or magic loop.

I just wanted to say thanks for this marvellous website and forum. I am especially grateful for the answer given to my problem which has now been solved by viewing the attached knitting video. Essentially I was knitting the wrong way (on the round) which resulted
in my stockinette stitch being inside the sleeve and not on the outside. Huge appreciation for the tip
:slightly_smiling_face: !

Oh, many of us can say that.
Been there, done that, and is part of learning. :smirk:
