Which type of sleeve to choose?

Greetings, I’m preparing to knit a sweater for my wonderful hubby and have trouble deciding which type of sleeve I should make, raglan, set-in or drop shoulder??? The size will be 44 chest measurement. I have this great booklet from Patons called “Back to Basic” sweaters that lays out the different type of sleeve. The problem is I just don’t know which to choose. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If it’s not a surprise I’d show him the options and let him decided since he’ll be wearing it.

Raglan is probably the easiest (new seaming) although I’m not sure about the saddle shoulder as I haven’t done one.

Thanks Jan! No, actually it isn’t a surprise. One question: what exactly do you mean by (new seaming)??

Maybe `no seaming’? But that’s only true if the pattern is top down/bottom up raglan. A lot of raglan patterns show separate pieces and you have to sew the sleeves in too.

Ack! Yes, I meant NO seaming. :teehee: And Sue is right about it being no seaming if it’s top down or bottom up. Ask DH first and if he has a preference then go with that.

It looks like you were trying to type no sew - maybe it could be another knitting term…

You might want to see if your local lib has this book as it has some helpful info, IMO, on how to determine the proper fit for men’s sweaters. (Which styles look better on certain body types, etc.)
