Hi, new to the forum here.
I am knitting the front of a jumper and currently shaping the arm and neck edge. But I am confused over one little word in the instructions. It reads as this:-
Work 15 rows dec 1 st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row.
I’m just unsure which row is my next row, the one I’m about to do or the one after that.
The rs is facing me and the neck edge will be at the end of that row. Do I knit without dec and then dec at the start of the next row???
Or do I count the row I’m about to do as the next row and dec at the end of this row??? Any help appreciated ![]()
I’d count the row you’re about to do as the next row and decrease on that one, especially if you’re working stocking stitch and just did a purl row.
Thank you Shintoga
The whole knit is 2x2 rib so it makes it tricky but thank you.
Welcome to KH.
What Shintoga said. Typically … not always, but typically … decreases and increases are worked on the right side of the piece. That sometimes helps in sussing out what’s intended. “Next row” will mean the row after the one you just finished. Another you’ll encounter is end with a WS row. That means to work the WS row and go on to what’s next. Sometimes it’s end with a RS row and you work a RS row and go on to what’s next.
I’m going to add some photos if I can ![]()
The more I read the instructions the deeper into the void of confusion I go ![]()

The part I’m stuck on is from SHAPE NECK heading
I think this is how it goes:
Cast off 7 in 2x2 rib, then continue in 2x2 rib to end. You should have 24 stitches left
Work 15 rows 2x2 rib, decreasing 1 stitch at neck edge on next and every alternate row. You should have 16 stitches left
Work 7 rows in 2x2 rib without shaping
Cast off in 2x2 rib
Thank you for your help, I think I can move on to the ‘next’ row now.
I guess there are two meanings to next depending on context, next week doesn’t mean the week I’m in but the next task is the one I’m about to do now. I wish they would just number the rows and give instruction that way.

Sometimes rather than a certain number of rows you’re instructed to work to a specified length and the instructions might include something like ending on a 4th or 8th row. I think most pattern writers try their best; sometimes they’re just trying. It does get easier.

That would be so much easier
but hope I was able to help!
I’m still confused ![]()
Do I decrease at the start of the row on the wrong side or the end of the row on the right side?
I don’t suppose it matters that much whatever I do as long as I remember for the other side ![]()
Yes it is really helpful especially how to finish as the pattern isn’t as clear as you are.
I’m over analysing it and have confused myself utterly.
Thank you both of you I do appreciate your time and expertise ![]()
I’ve done the same sometimes! Glad we could help ![]()
Definitely your next row you’re about to knit. You can always check how many stitches it days you should have, as it generally says "ending on a wrong side or right side. It will tell you to reverse for the other side of the knock, so remember what you did xx
