Which needle to use?

Hi,

I am EXTREMELY frustrated with my knitting. I just bought a knitting book because I wanted to do something more interesting with my next scarf. So I have been trying to figure out the charts. Realized after knitting for a bit that I wasn’t reading them correctly. So anyway I thought I would try Double Rib (I think that’s what it’s called?) because it was really simple. (k2, p2, etc.) BUT my knitting didn’t look like the picture at all.

I was using a 6.5mm needle, and mohair yarn. Is it the needle or the yarn that is making the double ribbing not show at all? (I don’t think it was me, because I know how to knit and purl, and it’s just alternating the two.)

So my question is, do you have to have a tiny needle for any patterns to show up? What needle size should I be using? Or should I be using different yarn?

I am just really annoyed because I was doing it exactly how the book said, and it didn’t looked ribbed. And this was like my 5 attempt to do a different stitch than just knitting straight across. The book (which I am finding explains things really poorly) never mentioned what needle size to use.

Fuzzy yarn won’t show the stitches so much; it’s best used in stockinette and a plain yarn for ribbed things.

I think it is a little of both. I made a nice scarf with some mohair yarn and I used an size 8mm (US 11) needle. Instead of K2, P2, I did a K3, P3 and it came out nice and wavy.
