Which cast on to use for

Garter stitch?

This sounds like a really silly question… but I’ve tried several of the cast on stitches, it’s just that when I try one, and then just start the knitted (garter stitch) border, there seems to be an “off” row - where it appears to have gone into stockingette stitch?

if not that, then it goes really loose… or messy-ish… :S

Would appreciate any help… my sister’s christmas pressie is at stake!!!

A long tail cast on pretty much forms a knit row, probably other cast on methods too. So yes, it will look like a row of stockinette but once you get going on the garter stitch, the cast on row will curl up just a touch and you won’t even notice it. Garter stitch is all knit rows anyway, if you pull it down slightly you will see those “stockinette” rows in between each of the ridges.

Thanks Knitqueen… guess I just have to be a little more patient and get past row 4…!

You can also gently stretch the CO edge and it will make the sts a little smaller so it’s not as noticable. Most knitting doesn’t look like much of anything until you get a few inches done though.

You might like longtail cast-on in purl, garter in knit. Or longtail normal (knit) and garter in purl?

Hi All…
Thanks for the tips - I’ve had problems figuring out the long tail cast on without trying to figure out doing it purled!! Do you just reverse the “normal” action to do that?

It’s not looking too bad at all now, I’ve done the garter stitch border many times because I keep mucking up the pattern!! And it’s supposed to be easy!

Lol… never mind. It just takes practice I guess, and keeping concentrated on the pattern!

Will post a picture (if i can figure it out) as soon as I get it sussed!
