Instructions for the back of a jacket I am doing state Row 1 K1(selvage st), work Pat A across to last stitch, K1(selvage st).
NEXT is where I am not sure if I am doing this correctly: It states to cont in pattern as established, inc 1 st each side (working inc sts into pattern, inside selvage stitches).
SO are the inc sts done in the selvage area or having to be placed into Pattern A itself which is in between the selvage sts?
What is the name of your pattern and designer please?
The increases come between the selvage stitch and pattern A at the beginning of the row. At the end of row the increases are between pattern A and the selvage stitch.
You might make the increases a knit or purl sts depending on the pattern and then incorporate them into pattern A on the following row.
What kind of increases does the pattern recommend or what kind do you prefer to use?
This is a jacket I was asking about in an earlier post for yarn assistance. I was able to finish both sleeves. However I came across these instructions for the back
Ah yes, very nice jacket. The increases will eventually be incorporated into pattern A either as you make them (knit or purl) or on the following row.
Did you have to do similar increases for the sleeves or were then worked without increases?
For the sleeves it stated: Work rest of sleeve in Pat A, At same time inc 1 stitch each side of next row, then then every 4th row 4 times, every 6th row 4 times - 52 sts.
Then to work even in pattern until piece measures 16 inches from beginning, end with a WS row.
WS row is a purl row for PAT A.
Then the rest of the sleeve directions are decreases for shaping the cap of the sleeve.
I placed a st marker for these increases and just worked them on the sides of these st markers so as to keep count of them.
Did I mess this up? You can’t see but there’s a stockinette border on the outer part of the sleeve where you will eventually join together.
So for the BACK should I place these as you stated - on the WS rows which would be Purl rows?
You can keep the increases in stockinette at the seam. That’s fine to do.
The pattern does ask you to:
“NEXT is where I am not sure if I am doing this correctly: It states to cont in pattern as established, inc 1 st each side (working inc sts into pattern, inside selvage stitches).”
That implies that as you make the increases (or in the following row) you add the increased sts to pattern A. If you prefer not to do that, it’s fine too.
You can work the increases on the purl row if that’s easier. I like to work the increase as a knit stitch just because it’s easier for me. Then on the next row, add the increased stitch to the pattern. If adding on a purl row seems better, it’ll work just fine too.
So if I do these increases on the purl side do I increase by purling front and back into first st ( not talking about that selvage st) and continue with the pattern on row 3 as written?
I’m just trying to make sure I don’t throw the pattern off.
Row 1 is K1, P1 across
Row 2 and 4 are purled
Row 3 is P1, K1 across.
You could do a pfb but to avoid the bump that shows on the front from that increase, a Make 1 purl might work better. You can try both out on a small swatch and see which you prefer.
